Idyllic location on the banks of the Dordogne 10 min walk from Branne and 4 miles from St Emillion. We sat and watched the hawks and herons from the patio. Accommodation was spacious , clean and well equipped.Owners were welcoming, friendly and very helpful. Plenty of places to visit as well as the vineyards to sample the excellent wines.

A house with great charm and ideal villa for a large family group or gathering.

This was a rare opportunity to gather all of my children and grandchildren together under one roof. Abbaye de Bonlieu had a lovely, well loved, family atmosphere. I had been a little worried that with 7 children under six, such an old house might have been unsuitable, but despite its elegance it was very sensibly and comfortably furnished and perfectly child friendly as well. To be able to exchange the formality of the house for the informality of the pool area was good. There is fully set up kitchen and outside eating area and we always had lunch and occasionally supper as well out there. The pool was chilly but not so cold you could not swim! The provision of a toilet would make a big difference. The extensive grounds with every kind of sporting amenity made it ideal for young and old alike.. Part of the charm was the way that, unlike many rented properties where every cupboard is swept bare and any sign of the owners swept away, at the Abbaye de Bonlieu you were moving into a family house, filled with books and photographs and where there was coffee in the jar and such things as pool toys and sporting equipment all left out for our own use. Something that was very much appreciated. Josiane (wife of caretaker) cooked us some delicious dishes and managed to keep smiling although, with us needing to feed such a varied age group, the rather small kitchen did become a little chaotic at times.The size of the kitchen is challenging but it is well equipped and there are two big fridge freezers and modern coffee machines. The location has the great advantage of being close to Bordeaux airport as well as being only a short drive from many of Bordeaux's premier wine growing areas and the coast. The disadvantage, for some, would be the fact that you are not really out in the countryside but once in the grounds of the property you would not know, other than the noise from the main road which is a pity but ceases to be noticeable once you are down by the pool.
