Saint-Marcel, France

Saint-Marcel is the name of many towns and villages around France, but this article focuses on a small village that lies in the Morbihan department of the country. At last count the village had a population of fewer than 1,000, so is not a destination for those seeking busy bars and a bustling town centre. This is a peaceful and traditional area of Morbihan, which offers its visitors rustic attractions and a chance to live life as a local for the duration of their stay.

Things to do in Saint-Marcel, France

Saint-Marcel has a small village centre that allows visitors to escape the beaten tourist track and immerse themselves in local tradition. Amenities are basic but adequate, and you will be happy to find cheaper prices than charged in some of the more tourist-orientated spots in Brittany.

The most notable landmark within the centre of Saint-Marcel is the Museum of the Breton Resistance, which focuses on the uprising of the marquis of the village (along with around 2500 men) in 1944. Saint-Marcel was a relatively important stronghold during the Second World War, and those that take the time to chat with the older locals will likely be told a story or two over a glass of the local wine.

Malestroit (3km) is the nearest village to the west, and can be reached by car in five minutes or walked in around half an hour. The attractions in Malestroit are largely the same as Saint-Marcel, with a small selection of friendly bars, authentic restaurants and family-run businesses. Malestoit also has the draw of a weekly market, providing you with the perfect opportunity to stock up the food supplies in your Saint-Marcel holiday cottage or farmhouse.

Places to visit on holiday in Saint-Marcel, France

The chateaux town of Vannes (37km) is a popular stop-off for people on their way to or from Saint-Marcel. Boasting far more in the way of modern attractions than the smaller communes that surround it, Vannes is the most popular tourist destination in the southern half or Brittany, and also has a number of historical, cultural and natural attractions within its old town walls.

Weather in Saint-Marcel, France

The weather in this part of Brittany is mild during winter months, with an average daily temperature a shade under 10°C. Spring and autumn are warm and largely dry, whilst summer experiences plenty of sunshine and 20°C plus temperatures on the majority of these. Due to this, a holiday can be enjoyed in Saint-Marcel all throughout the year.

Fantastic property with amazing scenery and beautiful pool

5 of 5
A beautiful well equipped property with a amazing salt water pool, what more could you want for a two week holiday in June 18. We all had a good rest with plenty of relaxing days by the pool and eating out in the evening or using the BBQ and sitting outside enjoining the terrace. The property and pool were very clean and Karen and Rick were on hand if you needed them. The house was also very cool on warm evenings and the beds were very comfortable, we just couldn’t fault it. Many thanks Ths Scuse Family from Leicestershire.

A fantastic holiday in delightful surroundings and a beautiful gite

5 of 5
Our gite, which is part of a wonderful French home, was just as described in the details. It was furnished in true French style with the added bonus of having modern onsuite facilities and contained everything that you could wish for with a self-catering holiday. The owners were friendly and could not be more helpful to us. We do know Brittany quite well through previous holidays but enjoyed visiting a few new areas and having fantastic weather to boot, we had a really enjoyable holiday. We thoroughly recommend this enchanting place.
