The charming Alpine village of St Jean d’Aulps lies in the heart of the Vallee d’Aulps in the Portes du Soleil region of France. It is the oldest village in the area, first settled by monks who built the impressive abbey which still impresses visitors today. However, it is not the historical importance of the village which draws visitors to St Jean d’Aulps accommodation, but the magnificent winter sports pedigree which it boasts as part of the Portes du Soleil ski domain.

Things to do on holiday in St Jean d’Aulps, France

Ski chalets in St Jean d’Aulps are wonderfully popular for a relaxing ski break. There are 20 ski pistes unique to the village, but with the 209 lifts and a huge number of pistes in Portes du Soleil, St Jean d’Aulps skiing holidays have enough skiing to entertain any standard of skier. Intermediate level skiers and snowboarders will be particularly impressed with the terrain. St Jean d’Aulps is an amazing place to stay, as the village has not changed at all for the tourist industry, staying completely true to its roots, and as a result, little bar the snow covered roofs changes between winter and summer.

In summer, the same mountains become the focus for walking, mountain biking and climbing holidays. The dark, forested Alpine slopes which encase the village hide some magnificent trails, and you can paraglide from many of the higher peaks in the region. Information on the 200km of walking, mountaineering and mountain biking routes around the Vallee d’Aulps are available from the St Jean d’Aulps tourist information office.

The river Dranse which runs through the centre of St Jean d’Aulps is a huge asset for any adventure lovers staying in a St Jean d’Aulps holiday rental property too. There are some fantastic places to fish along its banks, licenses for which (and the mountain lakes and rivers in the area) are available from the St Jean d’Aulps ‘Maison de la Presse’. Kayaking and white water rafting excursions down the river thrive during the spring as melt waters flash down the valley.

There are two golf courses within easy reach of a rental villa in St Jean d’Aulps. The 18 hole Les Gets golf course is particularly special, but you can also grab a quick round on the 9 hole Avoriaz golf course.

Summer stay in St. Jean d'Aulps

4 of 5
We had a very pleasant 2 week family summer holiday in this apartment in St. Jean d'Aulps. The apartment itself was cosy, clean and very well-equipped. The kids loved the availability of all the games and enjoyed sleeping in the mezzanine, it felt to them like they had their own 'apartment' up there. I myself was very happy with the kitchen and availability of pots and pans and crockery. The balcony is a bit smallish, but great for a family breakfast or afternoon tea. We enjoyed the view over the mountain from there and the birds flying on and off were very entertaining to watch. The swimming pool was a big hit with the kids. We have never skied ourselves and have never visited a ski area in summer before, so we were not sure what to expect from a summer holiday in the alps. Our expectations have been highly exceeded. There are so many things to do in the area during summer! The ski lifts make the area very accessible and nice for walking, I can highly recommend the walk to/from Pointe de Nyon. We went for a canyoning trip in Cascade de Nyon (booked via Bureau de Guides in Morzine), this was a thrilling adventure! In Morzine plenty of activities are organised for families during the summer holidays. For both young and older children. Still plenty of things to be discovered...we will be back (in summer!).

Beautiful summer retreat

5 of 5
A very comfortable chalet with plenty of space in the heart of a quiet village. Lovely views from the roofed terrace means outside space protected from the elements, while the main living space is a warm retreat later in the evening. It's a well-appointed chalet too, and it's a short and easy drive or even cycle not just from Morzine, but elsewhere in the valley too, with excellent mountain walks available straight from the chalet. From the bottom of the quiet road to the village, there's even a pleasant river stroll into Morzine. Highly recommended for a family or a group of friends.
