Make Holiday Rental Chalets in Saint-Chaffrey, France, Your Home Away From Home

The small town of Saint-Chaffrey is a perfect example of a little town in the French Alps. The town is at the foot of the Serre Chevalier ski resort, a vast ski area with all levels of skiing available. There is plenty of self catering accommodation in Saint-Chaffrey, where the chalets provide easy access to the mountain and can ensure that holidaymakers have an excellent time. Holidays in Saint-Chaffrey are about enjoying the winter wonderland of the French Alps in the winter, or the frontier to adventure that is available in the summer.

Things to do on Holiday in Saint-Chaffrey, France

The Serre Chevalier ski resort has 63 lifts and 2800m of ski slopes. Almost 700m of that is above the tree line, as well. This open space makes it a great place for snowboarders as well as skiers. However, in the summer, the whole area changes but is equally exciting. Four of Serre Chevalier’s lifts open for the summer season, making the mountain open for adventure walking and mountain biking. The mountain biking on Serra Chevalier is so good, they hosted the French National Championships here in 2008.

Places to Visit on Holiday in Saint-Chaffrey, France

Off the mountain, there is still plenty to see. The nearby town of Briancon is the highest city in Europe. It also boasts the 17th century “Fortifications of Vauban”. These are named after King Louis XIV’s military engineer Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707) who designed them to defend against the Austrians. The fortifications are so impressive that they were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. The area is also host to a number of outdoor activities that are not related to the Serre Chevalier ski area. The town sits on the edge of the Ecrins National Park, which is an excellent place for ice climbing in the winter, but also kayaking or rafting, hiking and general adventuring over the summer months.

Weather in Saint-Chaffrey, France

The weather in any mountainous region is changeable, and the French Alps are no different. When going out on your adventures, be sure to take sufficient clothing for all eventualities. That said, the weather in the Alps is usually quite good. In the winter, it is cold enough to keep snow, but not uncomfortable. The highs in Saint-Chaffrey are just above freezing. In the summer, the weather is generally excellent, with highs reaching 27 degrees Celsius in mid-summer. The precipitation in both winter and summer is generally less than 70mm, and fewer than 12 days per month exhibit rain or snow. April has the most precipitation, but this can result in a longer ski season.

Travel to Saint-Chaffrey, France

The easiest way to get to Saint-Chaffrey from the UK is by flying to Grenoble and catching the train to nearby Briancon. The station at Briancon is a quick 4km trip from Saint-Chaffrey. There are also coach services from Grenoble. There are regular flights with easyJet and Ryanair to Grenoble (GRB) from London Gatwick (LGW), London Stansted (STN), Birmingham (BHX), Bristol (BRS) and Liverpool (LPL). There are also flights from Edinburgh (EDI) in the winter.

Amazing chalet, great skiing and a great host

5 of 5
The photos for this chalet are great but it is even better in real life! Daniel is a great host and was particularly helpful in helping us organising our trip. With his local contacts, our ski passes were delivered to our chalet ready for our stay and sorted our ski hire through the Intersport 1350. When we arrived, the snow had been cleared from around the property so access was really easy and the two car parking spaces were clear for us to use. The facilities in the chalet are very good. It slept our group of 15 easily and there is loads of space for clothes storage and plenty of showers/bathrooms. The hot tub is a fantastic way to relax after a full day skiing and there is a drying room for skis and boots accessible from outside. Most importantly to us, the kitchen and dining area is really well stocked and is great for preparing meals for large groups. There are loads of pans, utensils, induction hobs and a big oven so we cooked in every night. The raclette machines were an added bonus!! Skiing is a 10 minute walk down in to St Chaffery so the chalet is well located and there are several shops nearby (Carrefour & Sherpa in Serre and Aldi in Briancon). Serre Chevalier itself has some really nice skiing and is well linked to Briancon and Monetier so we kept ourselves amused! Highlight pistes for us were Cucumelle, Casse de Beouf and Pylons but there are loads more great ones! Thanks for a great stay!

A unique ski holiday location with everything and more you could need but no luxury frills

4 of 5
P'tits Souliers is a on the slopes of the Serre Chavalier ski resort. It is an amazing place. We loved our stay in this unique historic family owned chalet full of character . Access is primarily by foot or ski during the winter but our Host Richard took bags up to the chalet by snowmobile and back down outside slope opening hours. You need some good skiers in the party to ferry food shopping up the mountain then down to the chalet by ski with back packs. Getting to the town for evening entertainment or restaurants means a walk down though the snow in the dark. This is beatiful in moonlight but needs good walking boots. Getting home means the reverse journey which is tough uphill walking in snow and took us about an hour. Fitter athletes may do better but anyone carrying an injury will be stuck. Mere mortals like us could only face a couple of outings to town spending nights in the chalet making our own entertainment. There is a good screen for showing films. The isolation is part of the charm of the chalet but you need to get organised early . It would be sensible to have a chat with Richard before you arrive as he is happy to ferry up some early supplies. Once you are there you need to fend for yourself. There is however well stocked wine cellar. This may not an easy place for complete beginner skiers because you need to be able to ski down ( either an easy green or the main black run ) to the bottom chairlift to start your day. Our teenage beginner had snowdome lessons before coming out and was fine getting down carefully supervised but conditions were superb. You will normally be the first ones on the slope as the lifts open at 9 am. The kitchen is well equipped with a big range cooker dishwasher and abundant cooking instruments. The dinning room has room for lots of people. On the down side the chalet layout is a little odd. The one shower and main toilet are accessed from the kitchen. so you need to be happy wandering about half dressed in all areas. The two upstairs bedrooms are interconected so you need to walk though the first to get to bedroom the second bedroom ( This double bunk bedroom has its own loo! with a little screen for 'privacy').. The downstairs bedroom is separated from the stairs by a thin half curtain which provides minimal privacy. The lighting circit is solar powered and light levels are low. An oil boiler keeps the place cozy and gas provides hot water
