Very Enjoyable Stay in Vars - We'll be back!

We stayed in the Gite du Porche for almost two months, and had a wonderful time. The house is comfortable and was situated perfectly for us. Mr. Blanloeuil is a welcoming, helpful and personable host, and we enjoyed his company so much we can't wait to return. We miss looking out the window and seeing the beautiful chestnut tree. Delightful

Wonderful place in a stunning location. Lovely, unspoilt French house, but with all mod cons to make life comfortable. Fabulous views across the garden (former orchard?) to the sunflower fields and woods. Very peaceful, apart from the odd chicken clucking contentedly. Very private, apart from a cat occasionally peering at us from a neighbouring windowsill. TV & DVD player, but we never bothered with them or the sofas - had all our meals outside. Beds very comfortable - felt like new mattresses. Great bath and shower. Slight problem with the swimming pool caused by the people who stayed before us, but the owners were very apologetic (& forewarned us) and the local chap who looks after it was very helpful and assiduous at sorting it out. It's a lovely pool - big enough to swim properly in (if you don't push off too hard!) and safely fenced away to keep children safe. Plenty of sunloungers and chairs to sit around it too. Local town, Mansle, is brilliant - little market on Fridays & Saturdays (delicious local melons, tomatoes etc etc), fab bakery, butcher/charcuterie/traiteur (make sure you try their spare ribs / courgette fritters), café full of friendly local characters. Plus the beautiful river, where you can hire canoes. And when we got back late one evening, and very hungry, we discovered a fantastic takeaway pizza place where they even roll the dough to order. V unprepossessing on the outside but delicious pizzas. Check out the race track at nearby Montignac for horse-racing and trotting, and fab takeaways cooked by local volunteers. Also the market stall in Montignac village for amazing olives and home-made tapenades. They even have a book exchange in a disused telephone kiosk! Racetrack also puts on brocante (car boot sale) and firework displays. Apparently we just missed the fireworks in Mansle. Abbaye de St Amant de Boixe also highly recommended - fascinating without being overwhelming. Biggest regret: not getting to the neolithic burial chamber down the lane (ran out of time!) Warning: the A10 is easy to leave (you get good directions) but not so easy to get back on again - you need to go to a different place!
