Simple, charming, very quiet.

While we enjoyed our week in the cottage we felt the owner's description was a little misleading. Apart from two small windows with net curtains there were no views of the lovely countryside and the small courtyard, enclosed in high stone walls, had very little sun. (This might be welcome in high summer). Access is really quite challenging, down a very uneven, stony path, and luggage had to be carried/wheeled 200 yds. The nearest restaurant, in Altier, was 5km away but very good. The town of Villefort for all shopping (even bread) was at least 8km. The cottage was comfortable for two of us, clean, and well appointed, but we think it would be very cramped for the advertised five.

This house is a delight

Sarah's house is a delight. A comfortable place to stay in a lovely area. The Provecals across the road were ready and waiting for us when we arrived and Mme showed us round. We don't speak a lot of French and she speaks little English, but we managed just fine. As we were in a pretty small car we also used the garage underneath the house to keep it cool. Plenty of inside space, especially as there were just two of us, and the outside spaces are also so useful. The terrace at the rear gets sunshine for most of the day and is a great place to watch the stars and listen to the owls at night. The front terrace gets the morning sun for breakfast, and then provides shade for the heat of the day. Sarah has many books, CD's and DVD's in the house, but just note that there is no TV. This wasn't a requirement for us, but you may not realise this when reading the description above. I especially enjoyed reading Carlos' recipe book which I only discovered towards the end of my stay - some yummy ideas in it! Unlike another reviewer, we had no problem with the internet, but you do need to follow Sarah's instructions and ensure everything is plugged in. Chamborigaud has everything you need with several places to buy supplies, a wonderful Sunday market, and lots of choice for eating out. We particularly enjoyed the Hotel Cevennes where you can get a bargain daily special for 15 Euros including wine! We also were lucky enough to experience the entertainment in the village - a couple of evening shows in the local park - great fun. The house is in a great location - we made easy trips to Uzes for the Saturday market, Barjac for the flea market, and drives down the Ardeche, Tarn and Jonte Gorges. We also took Sarah's suggestions for some evening walks close to the house - the Viaduct is very impressive. Other day trips that we really enjoyed were to the Cavern Pont D'Arc - just amazing, and the Aven d'Orgnac Cavern - where our English speaking guide was brilliant. The Chateau at Portes was open at the weekend and is certainly worth a visit. Just outside this on the drive back to Chamborigaud there is a sign for a honey producer. As we keep bees ourselves we went to take a look. It is quite a trek, and the road gets ever narrower but we finally made it and were able to taste several types of honey and of course purchase some to bring home. We would thoroughly recommend this house - thanks so much Sarah.
