Perfect sized house for our two families to stay

5 of 5
The four children loved the attic dorm and games room and the four adults loved the well equipped kitchen and comfy sofas. The pool was great and when the sun shone it was perfect to lurk about. The gas BBQ was brilliant and there was always plenty of hot water in the powerful showers. We cycled the country lanes on colder days and visited Ambert and had a tour of the mus'energy. Up the road we had a demonstration of wood turning and visited a French flea market. Overall this is a great house for a crowd as it is comfortable, big and well equipped.

Great place for large groups to get away from it all.

We chose this property for a family get-together - and it was a great success. The Chateau is a large house which arrived at its present form in the late 19th/early 20th century. Guests stay in the main house while the owner and the owner's parents live in the orangerie and the north east wing. The Chateau has been gradually restored by the present owners (the attic and the basement are still semi derelict). The ambience is large family home rather than a hotel. The layout is quirky but comfortable. Traces of its history are everywhere. Cathy and her parents were very friendly and helpful. Cathy catered a celebration meal for us which was the best food we had on the trip. The medieval village of Chalencon, the town of le Puy en Velay and the castle of Polignac were excellent days out but mostly we enjoyed staying around the Chateau lazing on the terrace. In amongst the feeding of the party of 15 a lot of wine was drunk (Cathy does not recommend the local wines with the possible exception of the rose). We bought supplies from the local supermarkets at Craponne and Retournac and the megastore at Le Puy. We had planned to visit Lyon but it is over 1.5hrs away on a not particularly attractive road so we settled for a bus ride to the art gallery while waiting for our train home. Lyon is huge and crowded (particularly after the rural delights of St Andre de Chalencon). The stay was memorable and great value. The party agreed it was exactly what everyone wanted. There was no shortage of things for the 7 kids to do - although the small solar heated pool was a bit chilly - and no shortage of space to avoid the kids. The Chateau is hide and seek heaven (in fact I think we left with only 6 kids in the end). Any tips? You will need a car - only Chalencon is within walking distance. You will be in rural france. Collecting the hire car from Lyon Part Dieu station and trying to get out of Lyon was a bit of trial after a long journey. Lyon is huge and not really a day trip - Le Puy (home of the famous lentil and lacemaking) was much nicer. In our sightseeing we tended to go south and east along the Loire valley. For a change of scene go west. Lavoute-Chilhac and the area around it is very pretty. Ask Cathy's advice on anything - she has local knowledge and is in with the locals. When the Chateau is not let as a whole unit Cathy does B&B as well by the way!
