Make a villa in Sagone your home away from home

Whereas most Corsican resorts are situated on coastal foothills of the interior mountains, Sagone is located on a stretch of the western coast where the mountains literally tumble into the sea. Obviously, this makes Sagone villas and apartments ideal bases for exploring the hinterland, as well as enjoying all the activities the coast has to offer. Sagone itself has a small fishing port as well as a very popular moorage for sailors, who come to enjoy the excellent beaches. The village is very quiet with limited commercial infrastructure, so Sagone accommodation is a great place to come to unwind, but not particularly dance the nights away. But holidays are, after all, about some all-important R&R.

Proximity to the sea for swimming means few Sagone holiday rentals come with swimming pools, but a select few will give tourists the option to lounge on the edge of their own private waters. In others, guests can enjoy the privacy of their own garden. Most have access to an outdoor barbecue area for evenings on the terrace, and a fully equipped kitchen indoors for self-catering meals.

Things to do

Beaches: What Sagone holiday rentals may lack in commercial tourism, they more than makes up for with incredible beaches. In addition to the broad sands directly by the town, there are another ten or so within easy reach. If boating, a trip up the coast to the cliffs of the Scandola Peninsula can reveal coves and beaches only accessible by sea.

Food and drink: There are a few restaurants and cafés in Sagone, and occasional others dotting the coast roads to the north and south – but these should satisfy the needs of guests if looking to dine out once or twice during the stay. The nearest concentration and choice is in Ajaccio, about 20 miles away. Visitors can check out holiday accommodation in Ajaccio if they'd prefer somewhere where they can dine out somewhere different every evening.

Outdoor pursuits: With its unspoiled nature, Sagone is perfect for outdoor adventures. The mountains call to be climbed, and watersports can be enjoyed right from the beach. The closest marina is in Tiuccia, about four miles down the bay, where HomeAway also has a selection of luxury holiday homes.

Shopping: There are a couple of small supermarkets in Sagone for food shopping, one of which is a Spar. For Corsica's premier fashion shopping experience, Ajaccio is only 20 miles to the south. The port has its own market, and plenty of stores featuring the artisanal produce of the island, including its famous charcuterie, olives oils, and honey. Make sure to use these for that evening meal on the terrace!

Culture: Nearby Ajaccio is the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, so much of the town is given over to his celebration, culminating in a huge festival every July. Ajaccio also hosts a lively week-long street and circus arts festival every August. Otherwise the port has more than its fair share of museums, as well as a historic cathedral and a citadel. If attending these events but having a quiet base to return to sounds appealing, Sagone couldn't be more perfect.

Weather in Sagone

Sagone boasts a typical mediterranean island climate with long summers, short winters, and temperatures moderated by the sea. Typical summer highs are around 28°C, while the average high doesn't often drop into single digits during the winters. Precipitation is sparse, but what there is arrives in the autumn.

Travel to Sagone

Ajaccio has its own airport 24 miles from Sagone, and EasyJet operates a direct service with the UK. Bastia Airport, 77 miles distant, offers a broader selection of airlines. Sagone's proximity to Ajaccio, however, which also operates as a ferry port, opening up flight options into Nice and Marseille.

Nice location for a holiday stay

4 of 5
Lovley location, easy walk away to the sea. There's a lack of parking space on the possession, and an outside access to water, as we had diving equipment which we were unable to rinse out. The shower cabin wasen't in a good conditon, as the water was leaking onto the floor. The only downside was that the duveys had to be paid for seperatley.

Tranquil villa, beautiful garden and large pool

5 of 5
The villa is located on the southern outskirts of Sagone with excellent access to long sandy beaches and very good restaurants. The villa and its garden are as beautiful as the photographs and the kitchen is very well equipped. Everything was also scrupulously clean. The pool is exceptionally good for people who enjoy swimming and has easy access with steps. The very hospitable owners, who live on the floor above, made us extremely welcome without being in any way intrusive, and were unfailingly helpful when asked for advice. The locality offers access to great mountain walking, interesting historic villages and towns and the Calanche (World Heritage Site) is not far to the north. We had a wonderful holiday with perfect weather in the middle of June.
