Things to do

On this particular stretch of coast, if the beach isn't shingle, it's typically concrete or rocks, which is perfectly enjoyable if visitors have sunbeds and flip-flops (and nowhere near as ugly as it might sound!).

Nightlife: The nightlife of Monte Carlo, a couple of miles down the coast, is renowned the world over, especially for its casinos. Fortunately, gambling isn't all it offers, with many restaurants, bars and lounges, which are typically extremely expensive. Menton, equidistant to the northeast, offers more reasonably priced entertainment for those staying in this area on a budget.

Shopping: While the nightlife in Monaco is expensive, the shopping is even more upmarket. The choice, however, is incredible, and some of the most exclusive and happening brands in the world are represented here. Quite the place for a window shop – if guests aren't planning on buying. In the town itself, there are antique and open-air markets, and there's one in nearby Nice every Friday.

Culture: Nearby Monaco has an eclectic selection of museums to explore, from the Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology to the Museum Monaco Oceanographic. In the other direction from Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Menton has its own visitable collection too, featuring its own Museum of Natural History and the dominating Basilica of Saint-Michel-Archange.

With the Alps encroaching on the coast here, the climate is somewhat different to the rest of the Cote d'Azur, as the mountains protect this stretch of coast from the colder north winds. Thus it tends to be warmer here during the off-season, and has pretty much year-round sunshine. Temperatures typically top out at 29°C during the summer, and mid-teens during the winter. Most of the rain falls in the autumn.

Travel to Roquebrune-Cap-Martin

The region's main international airport is Nice Cote d'Azur Airport, which is around 21 miles from Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. As the major hub in France outside Paris, it's serviced by most of the large airlines, and many of the budget carriers. Driving to the south of France is also doable, taking only a couple of days from the south of England. By train, good connections can get travellers here in around nine hours.

Blue Riviera in April 2018 - wonderful!

A very good escape from England at this time of year. The apartment is really comfortable and well furnished. Plenty of space. There is a small balcony with a stunning view direct onto the seafront below. The Val Rahmeh gardens in Avenue St-Jacques (30 minutes walk or short bus or taxi ride) are simply stunning. We saw grapefruit, orange and lemon trees in full flower. La Petite Cave Creperie Bretonne a few minutes walk away in the old town is fantastic value for money. The staff are really nice and the food and wine great. Le Taj Indian restaurant is also excellent. (please do not take any notice of what is said on Trip Advisor). The food is slightly different to that found in such restaurants in the UK as the staff are from Sri Lanka, not Bangladesh. The owners of the apartment kindly met us at the station and drove us back at the end of our stay. Nice and Monaco are nearby for day trips. Don't like flying? We took the TGV to Menton from Paris. Would we change anything? No only the travel as doing it in one hop from London was too long by train. Next time we would set off later and probably break the journey at Avignon.

Bellissimo apartamento

Abbiamo trascorso una settimana molto piacevole in questo splendido appartamento affacciato sul mare ed in pieno centro a Mentone. L'appartamento e’ appena stato totalmente ristrutturato, arredato in stile scandinavo e dotato di tutti i servizi utili (parcheggio , wifi, aria condizionata, due bagni etc). Le camere sono situate nella parte posteriore del palazzo quindi, pur beneficiando della posizione del bordo del mare, le camere sono silenziose. Un grazie di cuore a Sophia per la sua gentilezza, disponibilita' e per i suoi consigli utili. Ci torneremo sicuramente! Mirco
