Make a holiday villa in Roaix your home away from home

Listed on HomeAway is a fabulous choice of holiday homes in Roaix. The setting is one of peaceful agriculture - undulating vineyards with a mountain range in the background. If you have a passion for wine then there can few better locations than this village in one of France’s top AOC regions. A Roaix villa can be a luxurious place to retire to after afternoons visiting caves and wineries, discovering this ancient industry. The rest of the time you can take pleasure in the traditional charm of your villa in Roaix, whiling away serene days by the pool and evenings enjoying barbecues with loved ones.

Things to do

-Local heritage. Séguret is a local village, listed as one of France’s most beautiful. It sits at the base of a steep hill and has a strong medieval character, with cobbled streets, vaulted passageways and handsome squares with fountains. Vaison-la-Romaine is also in a hilly landscape, clad with vineyards and forest. The upper town is medieval in origin and is dominated by the Chateau of the Counts of Toulouse.

-Roman history. The city of Orange has one of the best preserved Roman monuments in the world. The Thèâtre antique d’Orange is UNESCO-listed and is cherished because its stage wall is still intact after 2000 years. The other famous structure in Orange, the Triumphal Arch, is also perfectly preserved, featuring reliefs depicting military scenes. The nearby village of Vaison-la-Romaine also has a Roman bridge crossing the Ouvèze.

-Viticulture. Roaix is listed as part of the AOC protected Côtes du Rhône Villages. You can take walks and bike rides next to these vineyards. All around you’ll find caves and wineries that can be visited for tasting sessions – you can also meet the owners and get to know the historic craft and techniques of winemaking here; just moments from Roaix is Vintner’s Museum, with a collection of instruments and tools, as well as a cellar with some 2000 bottles.

-Outdoor activities. To the south you can see the jagged outline of the Dentelles de Montmirail mountain range. The tops of these mountains have sheer cliffs, creating perfect terrain for rock climbers. And whether you’re a serious hiker or casual wanderer you can find a trail that matches up – you can wend your way through the entire range on the grand randonée or pick a less challenging circular trail.

-Days out. If you’d like to take an excursion then there’s lots to see in Provence. Directly south is the Alpilles Natural Park, a landscape that Vincent van Gogh painted in the late-19th Century. Hidden here is Glanum, an ancient city filled with impressive ruins. Standing to the east at more than 1900 metres Mont Ventoux is steeped in local folklore and even has a ski resort in the winter months.

Weather in Roaix

Roaix is in a Mediterranean climate zone, with dry summers and winters. May through September sees daily temperatures peak between 25 and 33 degrees. In heat waves daily highs can even reach the upper 30s. If you come to holiday accommodation in Roaix in spring or autumn then milder, damper conditions await, with temperatures in the mid to high-teens by day. Winters are short and moderate in Roaix – snow is uncommon, and temperatures rest somewhere between two and ten degrees.

Travel to Roaix

One way to get to a Roaix holiday home from Britain would be to fly to Avignon-Caumont Airport (AVN), which is 60 kilometres south of the commune. This small airport handles only a couple of routes to and from the UK, and only during the summer. Marseille Provence Airport (MRS), is twice the distance but, as one of France’s main air transport hubs, there’s a wealth of links to Britain. Despite the distance, the drive is easy – you simply take the A7 Autoroute du Soleil up to exit 22 at Orange, and get onto the D977 towards Vaison-la-Romaine.

Wonderful House Close to the Centre of Vaison-la-Romain

5 of 5
We arrived on Saturday and were warmly greeted by the owners, Leo and Martine who showed us around and explained how everything worked before leaving. The house is beautifully presented with a very pretty and secluded private garden. The location is very quiet with very little traffic. In fact most of the day, barely a car passes. However you are still within easy walking distance of the town centre and also the old town. There are plenty of good shops in walking distance including a couple of boulangeries. The kitchen is well appointed with new units, a good cooker, fridge freezer and plenty of utensils. There is a modern dishwasher and washing machine. The dining area and the lounge are very comfortable. There are four bedrooms which will comfortably accommodate 2 people each. There is a nice bath with a shower. The WiFi was excellent if you need it. We were able to park our car in a garage at the rear of the property which was great since the weather was very hot. The outside has plenty of comfortable chairs and two tables for eating. There is a beautiful vine covering one of the tables and we understand Leo and Martin have plans to extend it. We used the hot tub on a few occasions which was very relaxing. The garden is beautiful and the three olive trees give plenty of shade. Vaison-la-Romain is an excellent place to stay and also a great base to explore the surrounding area. Plenty of scenery, places of interest, great vineyards, wonderful food etc. I can't speak highly enough of the place. Leo and Martine are passionate about their house and we were only too glad to have been able to stay there.

Stunning property!

5 of 5
We had an absolutely wonderful time at Villa Pennard with my parents and children (age 7 and 5). The house is beautiful and finished/ furnished to a very high standard. The range of different seating areas to eat/ lounge was fantastic and well thought out. The swimming pool is one the most beautiful, clean and well maintained pools i've ever used. It was plenty big enough for all 6 of us at once. The location was wonderful. The surrounding area is very quiet and peaceful and a 20 minute pleasant walk into Vaison. The owners live next door and were lovely, even bringing us fresh tomatoes from their garden! I would certainly stay again as the house, pool and location were all perfect. In fact i wish i was back there now...
