Holidaymakers searching for holiday rentals in Riez also enquired about Sardinia villas, villas to rent in Marseille and self catering apartments in Nice

Make a villa in Riez your home away from home

Holiday villas and apartments in Riez are found in the alpine foothills of a region known for holidaying: around a third of the houses in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence are second homes. Like many areas of outstanding natural beauty, the industrial revolution saw a rural exodus and the population reduced dramatically. The advent of tourism in recent decades has seen the people return, however, and restored the population to previous levels. Riez villas really are a year-round prospect for holidays, with skiing in the winter and hiking, climbing, and mountain biking when the snow melts. Riez apartments are in one of the many towns and villages in the region that simply ooze historical charm and character, and are a decadent joy to explore. All this, and the beaches of the Cote d'Azur are only 80 miles away. If that sounds a little too far, of course, HomeAway's accommodation across the entire Cote d'Azur includes hundreds of homes right on the beach.

Accommodation in Riez provides for the perfect walking holiday. The jaw-dropping scenery becomes more dramatic the closer to the high Alps one gets, and Riez's location at the centre of the Parc Naturel Regional du Verdon is ideal for exploring the sights, including one of the deepest gorges in Europe. Most holiday rentals in Riez come with laundry facilities – to wash those clothes after hiking! – and a full kitchen for self-caterers. Additional amenities can include BBQ equipment, a swimming pool or large garden.

Things to do

Beaches: A day out to the beach is a definite possibility, with the golden sands of Cannes only 85 miles away, where HomeAway also offers luxury holiday accommodation. What holiday in the south of France would be complete without a story that begins 'While I was on the beach at Cannes...'?

Food and drink: One word: truffles. Those elusive fungi that chefs would kill for are found in abundance here, and their seasonal (often black market) trade is a large part of the local economy. Tiny Riez is the world centre for scrambled eggs with truffles. Other local specialities include black pudding with leeks, lavender honey and Banon cheese.

Outdoor pursuits: While the entire region is filled with hiking and biking opportunities, hang-gliding and paragliding are very popular, in part thanks to the Verdon Gorge, often (and unfortunately inaccurately) claimed as the deepest in Europe and ten miles or so from Riez.

Shopping: The much celebrated pottery of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is made only about ten miles from Riez. For the more advanced shopper with aspirations of greatness, Cannes, Monaco and the rest of the Cote d'Azur's upmarket locales are only a couple of hours' drive to the south. For food shoppers, Riez has a local market every Wednesday and Saturday, as well as a couple of supermarkets.

Weather in Riez

The valleys and lowland areas of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence experience the Mediterranean climate of hot summers and mild winters. Higher elevations, such as Riez, match the annual temperature variations but a few degrees cooler, yet with similar levels of sunshine. Summer temperatures top out in the low-20s °C, winters around 10-11°C. Most of the precipitation occurs during the autumn and winter.

Travel to Riez

The nearest major airport is Nice Cote d'Azur Airport at 96 miles away. This has a multitude of direct flights to the UK and is by far the best flight option. Driving to the south of France is quite doable, however, and only takes a couple of days from the southeast of England. Trains, too, are a possible option to Nice in around nine hours with good connections from London, but getting to Riez from Nice is almost impossible without a car.

Perfect Apartment in a Beautiful Location.

5 of 5
The apartment was beautifully finished and furnished, it had everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. Thomas gave us a warm and friendly welcome. The town is great and it is located perfectly for trips into the Verdon Gorge.

It was a brilliant place to stay! Quirky building with really interesting decor and features. Wifi

4 of 5
Interesting property with all the necessary bits and pieces to make for a comfortable stay. Wifi was good but strength was a bit variable dependent on where in the house you were. The hosts were very friendly and helpful , letting us use their garage. Location was good within easy striking distance of Riez , Moustiers St Marie and Saints Croix du Verdon. Loads of activities to enjoy, climbing, rafting, canyoning or just driving down the gorge. Piumoisson has a couple of places to eat but otherwise not blessed with great facilities. But with Riez only 7km away that was not a problem.
