Make a holiday rental villa or house in Puy-du-Dome, France your home away from home

The Puy-de-Dome is an area of stunning volcanic scenery, with soaring peaks making way for glistening lakes, gushing rivers and timeless forests. Part of the vast Parc National Regional des Volcans d’Auvergne in the Auvergne department, Puy-de-Dome is a sporting haven of the highest quality. Scattered with beautiful little Romanesque churches, medieval towns and fantastic spa centres, a Puy-de-Dome holiday rental will appeal greatly to anyone with a love for the great outdoors or rural French cultures as well as those simply looking to escape to a wonderfully peaceful scenic part of the world for a little while.

Things to do in Puy-de-Dome, France

The towering peaks of Mont Dore and Mont Dome are climbing, walking and horse riding centres of the highest quality. The volcanic peaks offer a great range of routes, from the leisurely to the fearsome, all of which afford breath-taking views across the countryside. The Puy-de-Dome stage of the Tour de France is the most gruelling of the whole competition, and for those wishing to really test their resolve, the route is open for cycling throughout the year. At the top, you are not only rewarded by spectacular views and an enormous sense of accomplishment, but also the ruins of a Roman temple to explore! Those wishing to see the temple need not attempt to reach it on foot, or from the saddle though, there is a road you can drive!

These mountains are a hotbed of activity, and the warm thermals rising up past the summits mean that hang-gliders and paragliders can be seen floating majestically miles up in the sky regularly. Those wishing to see the region from the air have plenty of options, as there are a good range of flying centres to be found. One of the most popular ways to explore from the sky is in the basket of a balloon.

For those needing, or simply wanting, a little pampering, Le Mont Dore is an excellent place to enjoy the finest of Puy-de-Dome’s spas. The thermal waters which emerge from the mountain springs are blissfully warm, and the spa centres of the region have taken full advantage, creating some of the most luxurious natural spa centres you can find.

During the winter months, the Puy de Sancy is an excellent ski resort off the usually tourist track. There are many fearsome downhill pistes to choose from, as well as wonderfully picturesque cross-country skiing trails to choose from.

Places to visit on holiday in Puy-de-Dome, France

The departmental capital, Clermont-Ferrand is a fantastic university town with a year-round buzz and a whole range of cafes, restaurants and bars to enjoy. Located right in the centre of Puy-de-Dome, Clermont-Ferrand is the cultural hub, home to the Roman museum of Musee Bargoin as well as the always impressive Cathedral Notre-Dame.

Weather in Puy-de-Dome, France

The Puy-de-Dome enjoys a surprisingly mild climate. Although skiing thrives during the winter, average air temperatures in January still remain between 0˚C and 5˚C, slowly rising to a monthly average of around 22˚C in the summer months, meaning that you can be active all year round without discomfort.

Lots of character and wonderful views

5 of 5
Thanks to the proprietors and the agents for a most enjoyable week in L'Escalette. We particularly enjoyed its fascinating location in Montaigut-Le-Blanc, with its magnificent views over hills and distant mountains and its many historical connections. The small size of the house gave it a cosy feel and, even if the veranda shown in the picture is a little challenging to get to (e.g. carrying a tray of food down a flight of irregular steps!), we enjoyed its exclusivity in the cool of the evening. We were warmly welcomed by the agents in Champeix (just 2-3 km down the road), and it was good to meet the very nice proprietors towards the end of the week. We did find the lock on the OUTSIDE of the bathroom door a little bizarre - none on the inside - but otherwise the cottage was well equipped. Thanks again!

Superbly refurbished mill!

A very tasteful refurbishment, with everything you need for a comfortable holiday. The apartment overlooks the river, and the natural hot spring is a short walk away. The area is breathtaking, and the volcanoes of the Central Massif are also close by. We had a super stay!
