Make a holiday rental villa or house in Puy-du-Dome, France your home away from home

The Puy-de-Dome is an area of stunning volcanic scenery, with soaring peaks making way for glistening lakes, gushing rivers and timeless forests. Part of the vast Parc National Regional des Volcans d’Auvergne in the Auvergne department, Puy-de-Dome is a sporting haven of the highest quality. Scattered with beautiful little Romanesque churches, medieval towns and fantastic spa centres, a Puy-de-Dome holiday rental will appeal greatly to anyone with a love for the great outdoors or rural French cultures as well as those simply looking to escape to a wonderfully peaceful scenic part of the world for a little while.

Things to do in Puy-de-Dome, France

The towering peaks of Mont Dore and Mont Dome are climbing, walking and horse riding centres of the highest quality. The volcanic peaks offer a great range of routes, from the leisurely to the fearsome, all of which afford breath-taking views across the countryside. The Puy-de-Dome stage of the Tour de France is the most gruelling of the whole competition, and for those wishing to really test their resolve, the route is open for cycling throughout the year. At the top, you are not only rewarded by spectacular views and an enormous sense of accomplishment, but also the ruins of a Roman temple to explore! Those wishing to see the temple need not attempt to reach it on foot, or from the saddle though, there is a road you can drive!

These mountains are a hotbed of activity, and the warm thermals rising up past the summits mean that hang-gliders and paragliders can be seen floating majestically miles up in the sky regularly. Those wishing to see the region from the air have plenty of options, as there are a good range of flying centres to be found. One of the most popular ways to explore from the sky is in the basket of a balloon.

For those needing, or simply wanting, a little pampering, Le Mont Dore is an excellent place to enjoy the finest of Puy-de-Dome’s spas. The thermal waters which emerge from the mountain springs are blissfully warm, and the spa centres of the region have taken full advantage, creating some of the most luxurious natural spa centres you can find.

During the winter months, the Puy de Sancy is an excellent ski resort off the usually tourist track. There are many fearsome downhill pistes to choose from, as well as wonderfully picturesque cross-country skiing trails to choose from.

Places to visit on holiday in Puy-de-Dome, France

The departmental capital, Clermont-Ferrand is a fantastic university town with a year-round buzz and a whole range of cafes, restaurants and bars to enjoy. Located right in the centre of Puy-de-Dome, Clermont-Ferrand is the cultural hub, home to the Roman museum of Musee Bargoin as well as the always impressive Cathedral Notre-Dame.

Although skiing thrives during the winter, average air temperatures in January still remain between 0˚C and 5˚C, slowly rising to a monthly average of around 22˚C in the summer months, meaning that you can be active all year round without discomfort.

Homely, fully equipped and cosy chalet

5 of 5
The gîte is fully equipped with lovely homely touches, really clean and comfortable and deceptively spacious. Gilles & Valerie are very helpful and there are plenty of guidebooks and leaflets in the gîte to borrow for the local area. Walks, cycle tracks, historic towns and of course the range of extinct volcanoes to explore. Rochefort Montagne, Mont-Doré and La Bourboule for food and light shopping; Clermont Ferrand for modern shopping and more historic buildings including a cathedral built from local volcanic stone. Great location in the countryside with opportunities to watch buzzards, red kites and eagles soaring overhead (they're very camera-shy!). Overall a fantastic tranquil location and temporary home.

Peace and calm in beautiful countryside

5 of 5
This was a perfect place to spend a Christmas away from it all. The cottage is spacious but cosy and has a big wood burner for nights in by a fire - it felt like home very quickly! The surrounding countryside is really beautiful and there are lots of lovely walks. It's a short car ride to the nearest village with amenities so you probably need a car. There is the Auberge de Moneaux restaurant just a short walk down the road however. Further afield there are spa/ski towns to explore and Clermont Ferrand is only about 50 minutes by car. No tv or wifi at the cottage but didn't miss either one bit! If you are looking for peace, clear air and being in nature this is a wonderful place to come. The owners, Evelyne and Michel were very helpful and prompt in all correspondence as was Olivier who met us and came to lock up. We would love to return.
