Make a holiday villa in Porticcio your home away from home

HomeAway's holiday rentals in Porticcio are sited directly across the bay from the pretty villas in Ajaccio, one of the busiest ports and tourist destinations on Corsica. Porticcio accommodation is therefore perfectly situated for the beaches on this side of the bay, as well as access to Ajaccio Airport and the facilities of the town beyond. Like most Corsica accommodation, a stay in Porticcio offers a unique combination of mountain and coast, so there's a host of activities to fill up a holiday roster, from mountain-climbing, hiking, biking and horse trekking, to water-skiing, sailing and scuba diving. There's even skiing in the winter. For culture, there's Ajaccio's citadel (unfortunately not open to the public) and various museums, one of which, of course, is Napoleon Bonaparte's birthplace.

Despite their proximity to the sea, a surprising number of Porticcio villas include a pool, which could be thought of as surplus to requirement. Apartments in Porticcio typically come with modern conveniences such as fully equipped kitchens and BBQ areas, laundry facilities, and access to tennis courts and a golf course. As is common in Corsica, wheelchair accessibility is limited.

Things to do

Beaches: Porticcio self catering have probably more choice for beaches than anywhere else on Corsica, with over 20 in the immediate vicinity, breaking up the rocky coastline. Due to this area's popularity, however, these beaches can fill up quickly in high season, so having a hire car can be a definite advantage to get to more secluded spots.

Nightlife: Porticcio has a smattering of bars and restaurants, all pretty laid back and informal. For a more raucous time, Ajaccio has a broader selection of evening entertainments including a casino, but remains quite refined compared to more downmarket resorts on the mainland coast.

Outdoor pursuits: It's almost impossible to run out of things to do in Porticcio. Tennis and golf are available, and the beach, of course, with all the attendant watersports. But for a truly spectacular time, hiking in the Corsican mountains is an absolute must. 45 of these craggy peaks top 2,000m, well on their way to rivalling the Alps.

Shopping: For shopping on Corsica, Ajaccio is second to none. The international sailing set congregate here during the summer, and demand a high standard, especially from the clothing boutiques and food stores. Ajaccio has one of the best food markets in Corsica.

Culture: The cathedral in Ajaccio is a big draw for tourists (primarily because it contains Napoleon's baptismal font), as is the citadel, which is sadly off limits to the public. Napoleon's birth home is now a museum, and there are also other museums dedicated to the tumultuous history of Corsica and art.

Weather in Porticcio

With average annual daily sunshine of 7.5 hours, it's no wonder Porticcio is a popular holiday destination. Summers are long and hot, winters mild and short. High temperatures in the summer typically max out at around 28°C, while the average highs in the winter hit the mid-teens. Precipitation is sparse, and falls mainly in the autumn and early winter.

Travel to Porticcio

Porticcio is located just to the south of Ajaccio Airport, which does have direct links to the UK via EasyJet. For a bigger direct flight selection, one has to look to Bastia Airport in the north, about 90 miles away. For non-direct flights, Figari Airport at 70 miles away is the closest alternative. Of course, ferries can be caught from the French mainland, so flying into Nice or Marseille and hiring a car there is perfectly doable, with the ferries conveniently docking at Ajaccio.

Fabulous in every way

5 of 5
Corsica more than lived up to our expectations and the house was a large contributor to that fact. It is extremely well equipped and comfortable with the most magnificent views that you never tire of. To wake up with the view across the bay every morning is amazing!. Porticcio is an excellent base for a holiday on Corsica - close to the airport without being bothered by aircraft noise, easy access to Ajaccio without being in a bigger town, all the facilities you need for a holiday are on hand with some great beaches and a massive range of fantastic restaurants.
