Make a holiday rental home or villa in Poitou Charentes France your home away from home

The Poitou-Charentes is on France's Atlantic coast, and is the sunniest place on the western coast of France. It also boasts a 300 mile long stretch of fine, sandy beaches, so is a favourite in the summer months. Inland though, the serenity of the wooded valleys, canals and Cognac vineyards are hard to resist.

Things to do in Poitou-Charentes, France

If you manage to tear yourself away from the beaches, sea and the restaurants of the coast, many of the regions famous Cognac producers open up for free tours to see how Cognac is still made to traditional recipes. Poitou-Charentes is a very flat picturesque region, meaning that it is hugely popular for cycling and touring. Bike hire is available from most towns, and a self-catering villa or holiday rental in Poitou-Charentes provides the ideal base for cycling, giving the flexibility and space required to have a cycling holiday. The futuristic theme park Futuroscope attracts visitors from across Europe.

Places to holiday in Poitou-Charentes

Poitou-Charentes, France is split into four departments, Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sevres and Vienne.

Charente, has a very rural feel, and is the main Cognac producing region. It benefits from rolling hills, and the north of the area gets mountainous and is covered in deep forests, attracting walkers and mountain bikers of all abilities. Angouleme is the regions capital, a fortified town where you can still walk round the ramparts, although this is not advised in September, when the town is filled with the deep roar of the annual vintage car race.

Charente-Maritime is the coastal region of Poitou-Charentes, offering 300 miles of beaches. A villa or rental accommodation here acts as a great base to explore the islands of Re and Ile d'Arix.

Deux-Sevres is the fertile, arable farming centre of the department, littered with traditional market towns offering the finest produce and craftsmanship to be found. Connoisseurs of fine food should certainly not miss the restaurants of Niort and Parthenay. There is also a fascinating marshland national park at Marais Poiteuin.

Finally, Vienne is renowned for vibrant shopping and architectural masterpieces especially the Romanesque churches in Poitiers, the regions capital. Also, for a family holiday to Poitou-Charentes, the theme park Futurescope is certain to entertain.

Weather in Poitou-Charentes

The sunniest region of the west coast of France, Poitou-Charentes receives 2,000 hours of sun per year, with warm summers with temperatures around 27°C. Winters however are cold and wet, although this does little to discourage the use of holiday villas in the region.

A beautiful city to visit, staying in a very quaint apartment - owned by a lovely couple.

5 of 5
Such a lovely city to visit, and it was made even better as we were staying in the heart of it. The apartment was comfortable and clean, and Stephane and Celine were great hosts, ensuring everything went smoothly for our family. At the back of the property is a large garden, where we were able to relax after a busy day sightseeing, and enclosed parking. I'm not sure if people are aware of this - it's a big plus in La Rochelle where the parking was crazy! Thank you Stephane and Celine for going the extra mile and helping us out on our last day, it was very kind of you and very much appreciated.

Faultless. A wonderful, peaceful holiday for all the family in Migron.

The first thing we noticed was how spotlessly clean Maison Cerisier and everything in it is. With a well equipped kitchen that actually works; sharp knives, easy to use fan assisted oven, easy to use washing machine, dish washer, plastic plates & cups for by the pool or picnics and plenty more, Amanda has thought of everything - It's like home from home! Outside, the property has it's own enclosed private patio with a Brabantia washing line (plenty of pegs), barbecue and table & chairs with parasol. Great for private sunbathing and relaxing in the evenings. On arrival, Amanda very kindly provided a basket of essentials (butter, milk, tea, coffee, pate, croissants, cheese etc.) along with a selection of reasonably priced local wines for us to enjoy during our stay if we wished. A lovely touch! Although not heated and with a temperature of around 25/26 degrees our boys, aged 6, 9 & 10 spent many happy hours in the pool, which is just outside Maison Cerisier, so easy to monitor. There's plenty to do with the kids nearby (speak to Amanda & Ian - Saints was our favourite place to visit). It's great for walking, running or cycling as the roads are extremely quiet and safe with lots of 'tractor only' tracks next to fields of grapevines, sunflowers and corn, which can also be used - Look out for the heron & buzzards! Overall, a perfect holiday. There's nothing to fault, so we would highly recommend a visit.
