Things to do

-Food and drink. Corsican cuisine is largely unheralded but full of pleasant surprises. The island is known for its natural produce, with citrus fruits, locally grown sweet chestnuts and a range of cheeses, as well as cold meats such as prizutto cured ham. A standout speciality is honey - varieties here have their own AOC labels.

-Nature. The scenery around Poggiolo is mountainous, rugged and perfect for anyone who wants to experience the full rustic beauty of inland Corsica. The legendary GR20 hiking route runs from the north to south of the Corsica and passes close by this village and even a small chunk would be a challenge for the most seasoned hikers.

-Beaches. While holidaying in Poggiolo you might fancy a trip to the beach, which is an easy drive away at Sagone on the west coast. The main beach here is a delightful, sheltered sandy bay, behind which wooded hills rise steeply.

-Cruises. Western Corsica has a beautiful but formidable coastline that in places is best appreciated from the water. From Sagone there are a couple of business offering interesting tours by boat, taking passengers to the unspoiled Sanguinaire Archipelago off the coast of Ajaccio, or the impressive fjords just up the coast at Piana.

-Day trips. Keen historians will be aware that the belligerent French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was born a short drive away, in the city of Ajaccio. You can see his birthplace, which is kept as a museum, and you can also visit city’s the old-town, complete with preserved medieval stone buildings.

Weather in Poggiolo

If you spend your holiday at a Poggiolo villa in summer then the chances are that hot and dry weather will be in store. In fact there’s warm, sunny weather as early as April here, and the high temperatures peak in the 30s in mid-summer. There’s a little more rainfall later in the season, but temperatures don’t begin to tail-off until late-October. Winters are mild, although the high-elevation does bring some rain at this time of year, and occasionally snow during cold snaps.

Travel to Poggiolo

Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte Airport (AJA) is the nearest air transport hub to Poggiolo, and has seasonal low-cost connections with a handful of airports in the UK. Another way to get to Corsica from abroad would be by ferry, with services to Ajaccio from Sardinia, Livorno, Toulon, Marseille and Nice. Corsican roads are well maintained but very twisty, especially in upland areas. Travelling to your Poggiolo apartment from Ajaccio by road means following the D81, which runs right next to the Mediterranean and as some beautiful views.

Peaceful!

4 of 5
Lovely peaceful cottage and well equipped. Lovely views to the sea and my husband enjoyed cycles in the surrounding mountains. Worth noting (although not important for our holiday) that it takes about 10-15 minutes to drive to the main road and there are no shops or restaurants in the village. If I was to suggest improvements - WiFi could be added and the shower perhaps updated. Generally though a wonderful and relaxing break in a beautiful setting.

A perfect little house to escape from it all

5 of 5
Located in a quiet village in the mountains, this house is sat high above a quiet road with an awesome view from the lounge window and balcony. The only noise is from the birds and crickets which was glorious! The house owner Marie met us close by and drove us to the house and showed us around. She made sure we knew where everything was and that she owned the local bar so wouldn't be far away if we needed anything! The kitchen is well equipped with utensils, pots & pans, dishes & cutlery, hob and separate oven. It was nice to have the coffee machine, something we made good use of. There were only 2 of us staying but there's definitely room for 4 adults (1 double bed & 2 single beds). The house is only a few years old so everything felt quite modern. It was nice to have the bedroom cupboards to hang our clothes up. There's an iron, spare towels and blankets. There's a drying rack outside with lots of space in case you do any washing and plenty of room for sunbathing and dining on the patio, despite looking small in the pictures. The electric gate made us feel secure and operates via a key fob. We walked into the village a few times for a drink and a meal (a few mins walk), we used the post office and got some supplies from the local butchers. There's also a patisserie in the village but we didn't try it out. Everyone was really nice and even though we didn't speak much French, we still got by ok because they made an effort with us (lucky for us!). The nearest supermarket is a reasonable size Spa 20 mins by car, but that's about it accept a few restaurants dotted around. The main city of Ajaccio about 40 mins away is where we flew to and it has an abundance of shops including lots of large supermarkets, home stores and a Decathlon. You would not be able to stay on this island without hiring a car because the mountains make everything further to get to but that's just the nature of the terrain and the landscape is breathtakingly beautiful. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and it was a nice, comfortable house to come home to after a day of exploring.
