Make a holiday villa in Piolenc your home away from home

Oenophiles will be in their element at Piolenc holiday homes – this is the world-famous Côtes du Rhône, where vineyards, wineries, caves and even a Museum devoted to viticulture are easily reached. And while the variety of things to do in the region is almost endless, there’s much to enjoy in the comfort of your Piolenc villa – sweeping gardens, private pools, modern appliances, all accompanied by classic stone architecture.

Things to do

-Local culture. Piolenc is a village strongly associated with garlic cultivation, and holds a festival for garlic at the end of August every year. St Peter’s Church is a charming old building, dating to the 1000s. The Chapel of the Penitents is an interesting example of Provençal romanesque, thanks to its dstinctive arches. In the summer you can also see a private collection of classic cars at the Chateau Simian.

-Orange. In a region that’s blessed with lots of Roman history, this city truly stands out. Two monuments here form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Firstly there’s the theatre, which is unrivalled in the former Roman world. It’s almost perfectly preserved, with an elaborate stage wall that is still intact after 2,000 years. A majestic triumphal arch is the other big attraction, with lots of interesting detail still visible.

-Outdoor fun. Set off on the Paysages de Jean-Henri Fabre, a circular bike route departing from Piolenc and perfect for families. It’s a fine way to see the agriculture around the village, with wheat fields, vineyards, olive groves, oak forest and the beautiful Dentelles de Montmirail as a backdrop. For watersports, the shallow and calm Cèze River offers family-friendly canoe and kayak trips.

-Avignon and Carpentras. South of Piolenc is the city of Avignon, most famous as the seat for a succession of popes in the 1300s. The magnificent Palace of the Popes from this time is still standing, and is held as one of the best examples of gothic architecture anywhere. Carpentras meanwhile is a delightful medieval city, with narrow vaulted passageways, fortified old gates and sights like a 14th Century synagogue and 15th Century bell tower.

-Wineries. The Côtes du Rhône area has a winemaking history that extends back to before Roman times. Most of the wines produced here are reds – the soil is ideal because of pebbles deposited by the Rhône, which soak up heat during the day and retain it at night. There are 45 caves and wineries to visit. In Orange there’s the Palace du Vin, showcasing the wines of 150 independent growers, while in Châteuneuf-du-Pape you can visit the Wine Museum to understand the history of wine in the region.

Weather in Piolenc

Piolenc has Mediterranean weather, which means short, mild winters and long, dry summers. The dampest conditions take place in autumn and spring, and these seasons get moderate weather, with some warm days and other mild ones. If you arrive at a Piolenc holiday rental between June and October then hot weather is most likely in store. Temperatures are known to get above 30 degrees during the day in July. In winter it doesn’t drop below zero often, lingering instead between three and ten degrees.

Travel to Piolenc

If you’re flying from the UK to get to a holiday home in Piolenc then you’ll have two options for airports. Closest is Avignon Caumont (AVN) at no more than half an hour. It’s a small destination, handling only a couple of routes from Britain and only during the summer. Much larger is Marseille Provence (MRS), at about an hour from the commune of Piolenc. As one of the top five airports for passenger numbers in France, it has numerous connections to the UK. The drive is straightforward – the A7 will almost all the way to Piolenc.

Perfect location to visit the Rhone wine villages

We loved the location of this property. It is in a peaceful and attractive setting and Ann, the hostess is very friendly and pleasant and gave quick responses to our questions. Booking was easy and the property was good value for money. We enjoyed the fresh eggs from the hens and produce from the garden. The house was adequately equipped for two people and spotlessly clean. The wifi was sometimes weak and not always reliable but it didn't spoil our stay. We had a great time.

A lovely place situated in very pretty grounds, the accommodation has everything you need, and the pool is very clean even if a little cold at first! Overall We had a very relaxing week here.
