Make a villa in Palombaggia your home away from home

Located next to the best-known beach on Corsica, villas in Palombaggia offer visitors convenient access to one of the wonders of the Mediterranean. The beach isn't the only reason to take a holiday rental in Palombaggia, however, as there is plenty more to see and do, including visiting a host of other beaches that – while maybe not as well known – are certainly just as beautiful. The town of Porto-Vecchio, where HomeAway also has a selection of holiday homes, is just two miles away and probably the most sought-after destination on Corsica. This is thanks not only to its tourism infrastructure, but also its incredible history and architecture.

That said, the beauty of villas and apartments in Palombaggia is that they can put guests right next to the thick of it, whilst offering a quiet retreat at the end of the day, somewhat away from the urban bustle. Holiday accommodation in Palombaggia is also some of the most up-to-date on the island, with fully equipped kitchens, laundry facilities and entertainment technology. Sadly, few Palombaggia apartments have introduced wheelchair accessibility due to their rural nature, but many are family friendly and welcome younger children.

Things to do

Beaches: Palombaggia beach is popular for good reason: sugar-white sand accented by red granite rocks, crystalline waters, and shady pine trees. It gets crowded during the height of the season, but there are several other beaches of note around Porto-Vecchio. Take the stretch beside holiday homes in Pinarellu, a beach which (along with Palombaggia) was voted one of top 20 in Europe by the Times.

Nightlife: Porto-Vecchio has arguably the finest nightlife on Corsica. The old town throngs with trendy bars and restaurants, and there are several nightclubs to keep feet moving until the early hours of the morning. That said, the Corsican party crowd is usually a little more mature than is found in mainland party resorts.

Outdoor pursuits: Corsica is about beaches and mountains, because that's primarily what it consists of. Thus, activities tend to centre around those locations: guests can enjoy hiking, mountain biking and horse trekking in the highlands, and fishing, boating, water-skiing on the water. Sailing is particularly popular, and Corsica is an established international sailing destination.

Shopping: Along with Ajaccio, Porto-Vecchio is known for its shopping. There are many boutique clothing shops, and artisanal food shops, which are seeing a boom in popularity thanks to the Slow Food Movement coming out of Italy. Charcuterie, cheeses, honey, and olive oil are particularly popular.

Culture: Bronze Age and Roman ruins abound around Porto-Vecchio. Castellu d'Araghju is a particularly prominent Bronze Age fort, about three miles out of the town and built on an overlooking hilltop. Also take a guided tour of the Porto-Vecchio citadel, and a walk though its old town, which has several galleries to browse.

Weather in Palombaggia

Palombaggio experiences a typical Mediterranean climate moderated by the sea. Temperatures don't get uncomfortable, even in the height of summer, with temperatures rarely topping 30°C. Winter highs tend to hover around the mid-teens, with occasional rare dips into single digits. Most of the rain falls in late autumn/early winter.

Travel to Palombaggia

There are only two direct UK flight airports on Corsica: Ajaccio and Bastia, both about 90 miles from Palombaggia. Solonzara Airport offers a closer commute, at around 30 miles away, but this requires a connecting flight from a hub in mainland Europe. Ferries from Marseille are also an option, and dock in Porto-Vecchio itself, but do get crowded in the summer.

Wonderful villa with fantastic views of the bay

5 of 5
We are a family of 4 and we had a great week at Casa Mia 1. Very quiet and relaxing with amazing views of the Palombaggia bay. I especially liked dealing with the efficient and friendly owners directly.

What a fabulous place to stay.

5 of 5
We had a fabulous holiday. The weather apart from one afternoon when it rained was perfect, hot but not too hot. The villa exceeded our expectations in every way, spacious, tastefully and comfortably furnished with a view that was spectacular. Some lovely evenings were spent sitting on the balcony, glass in hand looking out over the unspoilt wooded landscape to the sea beyond with no hotels or other villas to spoil the view. We loved our super large bedroom from which we also had that lovely outlook. The majority of our time was spent lazing on the beach and swimming in the crystal clear waters, although we did manage several trips out, one to Bonifacio Port and another which was a drive through the mountains using a route suggested by hosts. Both of which we would highly recommended. We tended to stick to the beach accessed via the three restaurants mentioned in Casa Mia's literature. Although you didn't have to use their sunbeds but we did find them comfortable and hassle free with drink and food service at your beckoning. We used Palm Beach but I'm sure the others were just as good although we were told that the Tamaricciu was somewhat more expensive. It is worth noting that these beach restaurants stop serving meals at 4pm until later in the year, end of June I think, when they then serve into the evening. The only slight minus was the bumpy track up to the Villa but once there all was forgiven and in some ways it made it feel more exclusive.
