Holidaymakers searching for holiday rentals in Mougins also enquired about Sardinia villas, villas to rent in Marseille and self catering apartments in Nice

Make a villa in Mougins your home away from home

Located in the heights above Cannes and known as the village where Picasso spent the last 12 years of his life, Mougins villas spirit guests away from the crazy bustle of Cannes' seafront, and tuck them into a quiet, forested cocoon of Provencal life. Accommodation in Mougins offers an ideal base for exploring the foothills of the Alps, and the southern Alps themselves – what better place to return to than a village where the main industry was the growing of flowers for perfume? With a central location for so many activities, guests can really get the balance right when staying here.

Mougins rentals mostly come with access to a pool, air-conditioning, and fully equipped kitchens, and are conveniently located for lovers of horse riding, golfing and fishing. Gardens are also common, as is onsite parking – and hiring a car is a great way to explore. With a diverse range of apartments, farmhouses, villas and cottages to choose from, properties can also welcome parties of any size.

Things to do

Outdoor pursuits: Ideally positioned for both the mountains and sea, Mougins apartments allow guests to experience the activities of both, even in the same day with a bit of driving. Hiking and biking opportunities are easy to find nearby.

Beaches: The closest beaches to Mougins holiday rentals are those at Cannes, which are widely regarded as some of the most exclusive in the world. If Cannes' sand is a little too pompous or hectic, however, there are other sandy beach options a few miles to the northeast at Antibes and Juan-les-Pins, where HomeAway offers a further selection of holiday homes. At the latter, visitors can expect to find plenty of picturesque views, particularly as the sun sets – simply head to one of the beachside, high-class restaurants, and enjoy a night of delicious French cuisine.

Nightlife: Mougins itself is well known for its restaurants, with a history of eateries starring Michelin-starred chefs such as Roger Verge and Alain Ducasse. The most famous is L'Amandier, currently situated in an old ecclesiastical court house. Dining out in Mougins can be absolutely amazing, but be prepared for the bill.

Shopping: Cannes' shopping opportunities are famous for being the preserve of the famous – because they're all typically rich! There are numerous exclusive boutiques to cater to the tastes of such clientele, but they're still wonderful to browse, if not buy. This is not a place to pick up traditional souvenirs, however; more a 'pick up a shell/pebble from the beach' kind of place.

Culture: In keeping with Mougins' propensity for food, every September sees the village open up their Les Étoiles de Mougins, an international gastronomy festival with keen attendance by famous chefs. For art lovers, Picasso's influence can be felt at the recently opened Museum of Classic Art at Mougins.

Weather in Mougins

It's often surprising to learn how mild the summers are, when it's so easy to expect the Mediterranean to be scorching hot. The highest daytime temperatures rarely exceed 30°C, while winters are mild and wetter, with daytime highs in the teens and more rain falling, chiefly in October and November. A typical year sees over 300 days of sunshine, so bring plenty of sunscreen.

Travel to Mougins

Cannes does have its own airport, but only for private charters for movie stars and the like... The best bet for common mortals is to fly in to Nice Cote d'Azur Airport, which is just 15 miles from Mougins. Buses do serve the area, but it's far more preferable to hire a car and drive in. Who would want to miss driving through James Bond country? For those who like a road trip, driving from the UK can be done in a couple of days. If travelling by train is preferred, London to Nice is possible in nine hours or so with the right connections.

A charming mas set in a beautiful Provençal garden

5 of 5
We have just returned from a wonderful family holiday in this lovely old mas set in the most magical garden. The house itself is tastefully decorated and furnished and very well equipped. Each bedroom has an en suite bathroom or separate private bathroom for the top floor room. The main bedrooms are very generous in size and very comfortable, with two single rooms ( without AC) available. The kitchen is very well equipped and there is a laundry room with washing machine and tumble dryer. However, it is the garden which really steals the show. There are different levels , one mainly planted with fruit trees ( the figs were delicious), lemon trees and an avocado tree. Another level dominated by the wisteria walk, which we would have loved to see in full bloom, another for the boule court, great fun for a family tournament. The main garden is taken up by the pool, a barbecue area, and a seating area with a fantastic view. A word of caution if you are visiting with babies or young children, there are day biting mosquitoes in the area and we were bothered by these, but with a little planning, ( we took pram and cot nets and special baby repellent) our little one wasn't bitten at all. A minor problem we had was quickly dealt with by Gina the housekeeper and her husband, and Anne Marie, the owner is always quick to reply to any questions. We had a wonderful time exploring the surrounding area and it was lovely to return to the house, have a swim and relax completely. We can't wait to return.

Excellent villa - all you could ask for.

5 of 5
The Villa benefits from a quiet location and provides for a totally relaxing break. The pool and terrace space + games make for a fun-packed time. My adult and teenage children loved it. Visitors should have use of a car during their stay but the main supermarket is just a 10 minute walk. The restaurant we used most is a15-20 minute walk. Special mention for Martin and Ann (our hosts) for whom nothing was too much trouble.
