If the idea of being situated between the famous Lot and Dordogne rivers amidst rolling countryside for your next holiday appeals to you, then you should consider a holiday rental cottage in Montsalvy, Auvergne, France. With modern kitchens and appliances, these cottages are furnished to a very high standard that makes you feel at home right away. This part of France is extremely beautiful, and there really is no better way to see it than by staying in a small town such as Montsalvy.

Things to Do on Holiday in Montsalvy, France

Enjoying the French countryside really is the order of the day during a holiday in Montsalvy. However, should you wish to do some sort of other activity, there is plenty available. Canoeing on either of the rivers is very popular, and there are also some very nice walks to be had along their banks. Cycling throughout the area is a pleasant way to spend a half day or two, and there is also horse riding available. Add on to this tennis, swimming and fishing and it is possible to do something different every day.

Places to Visit on Holiday in Montsalvy, France

The area around Montsalvy really is a delight to visit and explore. There are many historic towns such as Sarlat le Caneda, whose ancient narrow streets and unique buildings make them all worth spending time at. Another interesting village to visit is Rocamadour, which is built on a cliff edge. Apart from these fascinating villages, there are limestone caves with ancient paintings, vineyards, markets, and of course restaurants. The food at these restaurants really does need to be tasted to be believed – it’s not often that you get to try wild boar! Remember to sample the local wines as well.

Weather in Montsalvy, France

The weather in this part of France is particularly good during the summer, and this is when holidays in Montsalvy are most popular. June, July and August have average daily temperatures of 24 degrees Celsius, with sunshine and little rain. The daylight hours are long, and it is possible to have a barbecue late into the night at your holiday rental cottage in Montsalvy. During the winter the coolest months are December and January, where the average daily temperatures are around 9 degrees Celsius.

Travel to Montsalvy, France

Whilst the remoteness of Montsalvy adds to its charm, it does also add on a couple of hours in travel time to actually get there! Perhaps the nearest airport is at Bordeaux (BOD), where flights from British Airways arrive from London Gatwick (LGW). Toulouse and even Marseilles also have airports which could be used. Whichever one you choose, you will certainly benefit from having a hire care in order to get from the airport to your self catering accommodation in Montsalvy, and also to explore the region in general. If you decide instead to drive, keep in mind that the ferry ports are at least an 8 hours’ drive away.

Stylish and special

5 of 5
We really enjoyed our stay in this area of France. The property is very private with lovely views of the lake. There is plenty of space in this old farmhouse which is very well equipped and is stylishly furnished. The owners were very welcoming and provided some local produce when we arrived.

On top of the layered light of the Lot valley

5 of 5
We had a fantastic stay at the Hayloft, one of the our best holidays in France and there have been a few. Brian and Glynis were perfect hosts; there when you wanted them, invisible otherwise. With a little encouragement Brian has lots of little stories about the area and suggestions about what to take in, but only if you ask. The gite was lovely and cool when the temperatures got up. The living room and kitchen were very comfortable, with almost every thing we wanted (great response to a couple of requests), outstanding bathroom and very good beds with good linen. The double in the main bedroom is larger than a UK double. The pool was superb, outstanding views up and down the valley, with different areas to sit depending on whether we wanted more or less sun. Lovely garden, everything beautifully maintained. Good loungers with cushions by the pool and good umbrella cover, could not have been better. Loved the little covered arbour a few steps up from the pool for lunch. Granted courtesy use of a nearby fridge for booze and our cheese stash. AMAZING local cheeses in the markets, from both Aveyron and the Cantal. If you like pink wine don't miss a local rose- Marcillac Blush from Vignerons du Vallons available from the superb butcher in St Cyprien though Marcillac is well worth a visit for some shopping and lunch. Hope to buy a case next time! Brian may have more suggestions, good wine shop in Entragues as well. There are places to go within a half hour drive though it took us a few days to get used to the roads along the river and into the hills. Excellent local gallery at Le Don du Fel of you like ceramic art (not just talking pottery here-international ceramic sculpture), and the Galerie Pierre Soulages in Rodez, outstanding for those interested in contemporary art. Conques very beautiful, very ancient, countryside stunning.Great walking, long or short right out the door. Hope to have some canoe lessons so we can take advantage of the local centre about 15 minutes up the road. Loved the mornings watching the mist rise up from the valley, sunrises and sunsets. Local villages very enjoyable for shopping and some lunch. Spent lots of time just relaxing, hope to go back next year for more, to visit more of the local villages....just more! Nancy and Peter
