Make a holiday rental home or villa in Monpazier, France your home away from home

Monpazier is a commune in Dordogne, South-West France. Considered the best-preserved bastide in the region, Monpazier is featured in several historical films, and is regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in the whole of France. Visitors can marvel at some of the country’s finest architecture and transport themselves back to the 13th century when renting self catering accommodation in this model medieval gem.

Things to do in Monpazier, France

The main draw of Monpazier is the village itself, which was built by Edward I in 1284 and is a National Heritage Site. The covered market square – the Place des Cornieres - is the main focal point, and the houses that surround it are all of an identical size and incorporate some fabulous architecture. Some buildings have been recently restored, but all retain their original dimensions, with a 13th Century Inn, timbered buildings and narrow streets all vying for your attention. Make sure you visit St. Dominique’s Church, which was also built in the 13th century, and has an unusual ribbed vault that extends out into the chevet at the eastern end.

Monpazier is busiest with tourists during summer months, and a number of events are held between July and September, including a cycle race around the bastide, a kermesse (festival), several specialist markets (including a mushroom market) and a medieval fete.

The countryside around Monpazier is hilly and wooded, and makes for some great hiking opportunities that will get you off the beaten tourist track. Within reasonable walking distance are the Chateau du Biron and the Dordogne River, and there are several neighbouring villages within reach if you are prepared to make a day of it. A good idea is to pick up a baguette, and some locally produced cheese and wine from the village shops and take a picnic with you to enjoy out in the countryside, under the sun.

Places to visit on holiday in Monpazier, France

The neighbouring villages of Biron (8km) and Capdrot (3km) are also home to some fantastic architecture, and are well worth a visit. Biron Castle has had many additions over the centuries, including the cellar kitchens, a 12th century dungeon, Renaissance apartments and san impressive state room. The nearest town is Bergerac (49km), which is famous for wine and tobacco production.

Weather in Monpazier, France

Monpazier has a mild climate all year round, with summer temperatures sunny and pleasant, but rarely hot and uncomfortable, and winters rarely below an average of 10C. Rainfall is well distributed throughout the year, which makes it ideal for the vines in the surrounding wine regions.

Flights to Monpazier, France

The most convenient airport to fly to from the UK is Bergerac Airport (EGC), which is well under an hour’s drive away from your holiday rental accommodation in Monpazier. Bordeaux Airport (BOD) is another option, with the famous wine producing region an enjoyable two hour drive away.

The facility was immaculate. Everything we’d hoped for and more.

5 of 5
The property was part of a beautifully restored old farm building that had been tastefully decorated and furnished to a high standard. It’s quiet rural location was perfect for getting away from the stresses of living/working in or near a city. We literally saw more jet vapour trails above us than cars go by the gite. Once we’d managed to stir ourselves and leave the lovely pool (the weather was very warm) it was ideally situated to visit some of the many joys the region has to offer. Some of the bastide towns are not to be missed. The Dordogne is simply stunning. Everything was perfect and just what was needed but for us the highest praise must go to Caroline and Craig who made the holiday extra special. They really are so warm and welcoming and nothing was too much bother. Definitely the right people for the job 😊. Thank you so much. Mike and Geraldine.

Les Charmes charmed!!

5 of 5
We have just had a delightful week at Les Charmes with all the family. It is a beautifully presented property set in pretty well maintained grounds. Our gite was airy and spacious, stylish, comfortably furnished and immaculately clean (and with plenty of the basics like pots and pans and cutlery. Having been to places that have provided one cup, one plate etc per person this really does make a difference!). The pool area was very well maintained and clean and we all very much enjoyed the outdoor spaces available. Hosts Dave and Amanda were on hand and always very helpful. If you want a busy nightlife close to hand this is not the right place for you... but if you want a chilled relaxing holiday where the frogs ( yes ... many many frogs!) sing you to sleep at night this is absolutely lovely!!
