Make a holiday rental home or villa in Monflanquin, France your home away from home

Monflanquin, a stunning French bastide town in Lot-et-Garonne, stands prominently on a hilltop overlooking the countryside of Aquitaine. Known as the finest example of a bastide town you can find, Monflanquin is a maze of narrow streets and alleyways, which simply ooze with history and character. Listed among the ‘most beautiful villages in France’, Monflanquin has managed to avoid the mass tourist market partially due to its location, high on a hill in the French countryside. If you do make the effort to visit, you will certainly not be disappointed.

Things to do on holiday in Monflanquin, France

Monflanquin is a magnificent destination to retreat to for a few weeks a year, allowing you to relax and let it all go. The idyllic setting and beautiful, timeless architecture, especially around the main square, the Place des Arcades, is a wonderful place to sit and eat, especially when you consider the number of excellent restaurants which call Monflanquin home. There are only a few days in the summer when Monflanquin is not peaceful; during the several ‘mediaeval days’ celebrated in summer, when there is a festival atmosphere in the streets, with falconry displays, ancient costumes and general merriment galore!

If you would like to find out a little more about bastide towns, there is an excellent little museum in the corner of the market square, which not only points out and explains the finest monuments and places of interest in Monflanquin, but also gives you a history and explanation of bastide towns in general.

Taking a self catering Monflanquin apartment or house is made a real joy by the weekly open air market which rolls into town every Thursday morning. From the various stalls you can buy the finest local produce for bargain prices, and get helpful tips on how best to prepare the ingredients.

If you feel you have eaten a little too much, the surrounding countryside is perfect for loosing those extra pounds whilst maintaining a comfortable smile on your face! The walking, cycling and horse riding tours of the countryside are excellent, due to a combination of wonderful scenery and an amazing amount of birdlife. There are also many vineyards in the area, many of which embrace wine tasting tours.

Golf courses litter the countryside too, so if you are hoping for a quick round whilst in your Monflanquin villa, you are in luck.

Great escape!

5 of 5
What can I say? We had an amazing time with everything we needed for a fantastic holiday. If you need peace and quiet you'll find it here. If you are interested in local markets, chateaux and scenic countryside you'll find that here too. As far as the house is concerned, there is space to spare for teenagers to have some time to themselves, a great pool to cool off in and the choice eating inside or out. Everything we thought we could need was provided for us and more that we hadn't even thought of. Although we enjoyed the hottest weather of the year (35 degrees plus) the bedrooms were cool enough to sleep comfortably. From a nature point of view, there are clear dark skies to enjoy, lizards to find and a friendly frog who announces its presence with a plop as it lands on a door or a tile. All in all it is well worth the drive through France to get here.
