Malaucene is a walled town in the Vaucluse region of Provence with a number of small shops and a weekly market. The area has many natural and historic sites which make this the ideal base for enjoying a relaxing self-catering holiday in Provence. Malaucene is just 9 km south of Vaison-la-Romaine. As the summer residence of the Pope in the 14th century, the town has some wonderful churches. The region is a delight to explore with its charming villages, vineyards and cherry orchards on the lower slopes of Mont Ventoux.
There are a host of local walks and horse-riding trails in the forested hills around your Malaucene holiday rental. Take the scenic route to Mount Ventoux, 6200 feet above sea level, or the magnificent walk to the local Calgary with its panoramic views of the area. Along the way there are many unusual sights such as the local llama farm and weaving mill.
There are a range of activities which you can enjoy from your Malauceen holiday villa. Tennis, mini golf, fishing, riding, climbing and hang gliding are all available in the summer and you can ski in the nearby mountains during the winter months.
Within its old fortified walls, Malaucene has a Gothic church with a beautifully carved pulpit and historic organ. The clock tower is dated 1539 and there is also the 12th century Chapel of Groseau.
Thenearby town of Beaume de Venise is renowned for its wine production and there are plenty of opportunities for wine tasting and touring the local vineyards. It is just 3 miles from your Malaucene holiday villa.
Dominated by its Roman ruins, this small French town is the site of the largest archaeological dig in France, making an interesting place to visit just a couple of miles from Malaucene.Avignon
The marvelous Cathedrale Notre Dame des Doms was rebuilt in 1425 and is in Byzantine style with a collection of tiered arches. It is topped by a more recent Virgin Mary lantern which can be seen shining for miles around. The baroque nave and tomb of Pope John XXII are the main highlights. Avignon is a pleasant 45 minute drive from your Malaucene holiday home.
The Provence region has hot sunny summers which reach 30°C (86°F) and cool winters which may occasionally see temperatures close to freezing and daytime highs around 10-15°C (50-60°F). The area has slightly more rain showers in the autumn.
The closest railway station to your Malaucene holiday rental is at Avignon, about 34km away with regular TGV trains. There are also several local airports including Nimes (FNI) Airport (73km away) and Marseille (MRS) Airport (81km away) which both have plenty of cheap flights from all over Europe. A car is recommended for exploring this quiet area.
