  • A Gite with Class
    5 of 5

The gite is located in the grounds of a chateau which we were not expecting. Our hosts were excellent. Monsieur et Madame Morillion welcomed us the the gite and were kind enough to show us around their very distinctive house. The gite was peaceful and private with a generous amount of room and all of the facilities you could need. We had two outside seating areas, one for breakfast and one for lunch and dinner. We lived off the bar-b-que and eat outside every day. We had our own pond with a large supply of frogs which were fascinating to watch. We could walk to the boulangerie every morning and get (except monday) to get fresh bread while a decent sized supermarket was only 5 minutes away. We enjoyed our stay very much.

  • Excellent!

We stayed at Chez Mathilde for a week in June. The cottage is divine. Loads of room, with lovely period features of the 17th century property. Annie lives next door and was so very welcoming to us even though we speak no French. Annie's daughter however lives in the property the other side of cottage and she speaks fluent English and was so helpful to us with advising places to visit. The cottage is well equipped with everything you will need and also has a nice courtyard garden which was lovely to spend time to eat meals and relax. The area of Rarecourt is very peaceful with the only real sound being the chiming clock of the nearby church. Verdun itself is a lovely place with many cafes and restaurants beside the river. It is also only a short drive to many WW1 sites. My advice would be to not spend all your time on the heavily advertised main attractions. There is so much more in the area that will not have the obligatory coach parties turning up to. I would recommend the butte de vauquois, le main de massiges (both of which are free to enter) and the privately owned 14-18 museum at Romagne-sous-montfaucon. This cottage is a perfect find in a lovely area. Many thanks for a wonderful stay.
