Make a holiday rental home or villa in Lorraine, France your home away from home

The Lorraine region of France is found in the far north-east, bordering Germany, Belgium and Luxemburg. The lush, rolling hills and large limestone ridges prove a stunning landscape, riddled with historical monuments which are testament to the region’s turbulent past.

Things to do in Lorraine, France

The natural beauty of Lorraine is wonderfully unspoilt. The steep escarpments, peaceful lakes and forest covered hills of the region are idyllic, and many visitors to Lorraine accommodation are there to enjoy world class walking and horse riding holidays. There are many thousands of miles of walking routes in Lorraine, and after a long day of activity in the countryside, the health spas that line the banks of the Vosges are the perfect place to relax and recuperate.

The rivers and lakes of Lorraine are numerous and natural. There is a great deal of scope for sailing, windsurfing and fishing in Lorraine, and those wishing to explore the region from a unique angle can spend many happy hours silently paddling along the rivers of Lorraine in a canoe.

The gastronomy of Lorraine is famous throughout Europe, especially for its cheese and wines. The most famous dish from the area is quiche Lorraine, which is especially delicious when served from one of the small, family restaurants or cafes that are scattered throughout the region. The long history of Lorraine has meant that the area has changed nationality three times, and therefore the cuisine is absolutely unique and completely enchanting.

Places to visit on holiday in Lorraine, France

The Vosges department of Lorraine is a walker’s and rock climber’s dream. The southernmost department of Lorraine is a region of wooded mountains, where life seems to flow at a pace so wonderfully relaxing that leaving a Lorraine holiday home here is always extremely hard. Outdoor activities thrive, and there is very little you cannot do in the woods, lakes and mountains of Vosges. Skiing is particularly popular in resorts including Gerardmer.

Moselle is home to the capital of Lorraine, Metz. There are many beautiful walks along the river banks from Metz, and the Lorraine National Park is an absolute treasure, especially for walkers and nature lovers. Moselle is also adorned with important historical monuments, the most popular of which are the Gallo-Roman thermal baths and the St Etienne Cathedral in Metz.

Those travelling to Lorraine to contemplate the horrors of WWI couldn’t be better placed than from Lorraine accommodation in Meuse. The haunting battlefields of Verdun and the sobering cemeteries are essential places to visit on any Lorraine holiday.

Nancy, which lies in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department of Lorraine will endear and captivate any visitor. The city has a wonderful mix of historical elegance and art nouveau extravagance, that mix perfectly.

Travel to Lorraine, France

Both Metz-Nancy-Lorraine Airport (ETZ) and Strasbourg Airports (SXB) are within 100km of a holiday rental in Lorraine, France. There are plenty of hire car facilities at the both airports, and in an area with so much to see and do across a large rural region, taking a hire car on your Lorraine holiday is strongly recommended.

A Gite with Class

5 of 5
The gite is located in the grounds of a chateau which we were not expecting. Our hosts were excellent. Monsieur et Madame Morillion welcomed us the the gite and were kind enough to show us around their very distinctive house. The gite was peaceful and private with a generous amount of room and all of the facilities you could need. We had two outside seating areas, one for breakfast and one for lunch and dinner. We lived off the bar-b-que and eat outside every day. We had our own pond with a large supply of frogs which were fascinating to watch. We could walk to the boulangerie every morning and get (except monday) to get fresh bread while a decent sized supermarket was only 5 minutes away. We enjoyed our stay very much.

Excellent!

5 of 5
We stayed at Chez Mathilde for a week in June. The cottage is divine. Loads of room, with lovely period features of the 17th century property. Annie lives next door and was so very welcoming to us even though we speak no French. Annie's daughter however lives in the property the other side of cottage and she speaks fluent English and was so helpful to us with advising places to visit. The cottage is well equipped with everything you will need and also has a nice courtyard garden which was lovely to spend time to eat meals and relax. The area of Rarecourt is very peaceful with the only real sound being the chiming clock of the nearby church. Verdun itself is a lovely place with many cafes and restaurants beside the river. It is also only a short drive to many WW1 sites. My advice would be to not spend all your time on the heavily advertised main attractions. There is so much more in the area that will not have the obligatory coach parties turning up to. I would recommend the butte de vauquois, le main de massiges (both of which are free to enter) and the privately owned 14-18 museum at Romagne-sous-montfaucon. This cottage is a perfect find in a lovely area. Many thanks for a wonderful stay.
