Lodeve - The culture of Lodevois

Lodeve is in the Languedoc but it is acknowledged by the locals as part of the Midi and boasts a Mediterranean climate of blue skies and sunshine. The city is a typical French hill town with narrow alleys and high buildings, but very much a working town, rather than a tourist town, but it has excellent restaurants and shops.

This is an area of outstanding beauty renowned for a diversity of outdoor activities including walking, (with 200km of signed walks and cycling routes, as well as sailing and other water sports at the nearby Lake Salagou).

Historical architecture includes the Cathedral of Saint Fulcran, the medieval bridges and the nearby village of St Guilhem Le Desert, the fortified Cathar villages and the spectacular Cirque de Navacelles. Modern taste is more than catered for by the spectacular Millau Bridge over the river Tarn in the foothills of the Massive Central Mountains.

The annual Literary Festival in July attracts people from all over Europe to see the exhibitions and listen to the street-side poetry reading and music.

Lodeve has an outstanding Saturday Street Market selling local produce including the wines of Languedoc, Rochfort Cheese and of course an abundance of fresh local fruit, vegetables and other produce.

A feature of the Lodeve is the frequent pilgrims on route to St Jacques de Compostelle in Northern Spain. The route passes through the middle of Lodeve and walkers, cyclists, and horse riders, often dressed rather eccentrically, are frequently seen in the town, adding to the cosmopolitan dress of the residents. The sign of a shell carved above doors on some of the older houses is a sign of hospitality for the pilgrims.

Lodeve is an ideal base to explore the mountains to the North and the beaches to the South.

Fantastic Villa

5 of 5
The property was the best equipped luxury villa we have stayed at in almost 20 years of renting villas in France. There was a huge heated pool, solar powered shower by the pool, with pool toys for young kids. At least 6 outdoor tables and chairs - and some really smart rattan furniture on upper and lower terraces, with wonderful views of the hills to watch the sunset in the upper terrace and sip a glass or two. Large comfy lounge with all you could need - large dining suite -TV DVD CD books by the dozen etc. Great covered BBQ area and table beside. The kitchen had everything you could need - big table and great equipment too. Bedrooms comfy - plenty of wardrobes - great family bathroom - en suite on the main - another toilet and shower room in the pool suite - and another shower and toilet in the sports room. The sports room has a table tennis table - pool / snooker table football , air hockey, darts and another set of comfy chairs to play on the PlayStation with lots of games for the kids. It was truly superb and immaculately clean. We loved to walk to the village - 5 minutes away and buy some local produce from the shops - bakery and a few other friendly general stores. We also ate in the cafe at the square a few lunchtimes - good food and nice wine. We thought the directions to the house were excellent and sensibly advised us not to go through the village in the car on arrival as some streets are narrow and a challenge till you get used to them and the directions / route we followed were great and no hassle at all. Overall it is an exceptional villa and We would happily go back any time.

Perfect for our relaxing break

5 of 5
Second visit to this villa and it was (again) just what we wanted. We arrived early and went straight to the villa as we knew where it was, etc. having been before. Alison was part-way through the cleaning, so we just left our bags and went off to do the "big shop". Alison was extremely welcoming and accommodating, sorting out the gas bbq and showing us the new sunloungers, stored cushions, parasol, spare bed linen, etc. The villa and its location is perfect for us: quiet, relaxing, well equipped, clean and tidy. The weather was always hot and sunny, with the odd day of high winds (even the cantilevered parasol could not cope in some of the winds, but that's not the fault of the villa!). The pool is perfect to get you through the hot, sunny afternoons. The cold beers are perfect to get you through an early evening game of boules on the gravel area. The warm, calm evenings are perfect for a twilight bbq and fantastic views as the sun slips down behind the house. It's great to have bread and the newspaper ("Midi Libre") within walking distance in the village ... and a quick coffee or beer before the 500 yard walk back! There is plenty of great local produce in supermarkets at le Bosc or Lodeve: fresh fish and meat for the bbq, fantastic fruit and cheeses, and local wines (we became addicted to St Saturnin rose and Jordy reds). Try the Aveyron Sausage and Aligot. Restaurants involve a bit of a drive (except the village bar), but the roads are good and the food is always worth it. Too many to list, but plenty to choose in St Felix, Clermont, Lodeve, and even Cartels. We didn't use the TV, but UK stations all available if you need to keep up with the news ... or the soaps. Local radio (Bleu Herault) is good for local weather, traffic, etc. and relaxing by the pool. Maybe a portable radio at the villa for the kitchen and outdoors would help (and stop draining my phone/speaker batteries!). All in all, the perfect place to relax and live in peaceful, rural France.
