Make a holiday rental cottage or villa in Limousin your home away from home

Limousin is considered one of the best-kept secrets in France. A stunning rural region filled with lakes, rolling valleys and forested mountains crossed by fish filled rivers. The tiny hamlets and villages conceal treasures of French rural life, and some of the finest rural cottages and gites in Limousin. Taking any of the Limousin holiday accommodation available will ensure you enjoy a relaxing and tranquil holiday surrounded by fabulous scenery, wildlife and the diverse rural cultures of 'real' France.

Things to do in Limousin, France

The landscape of Limousin has a long history, from the pre-historic to the Romans, and the heather strewn moorlands were the inspiration for many of Monet's famous paintings. There are a huge number of important sites and town's in France's history, from Limoges, the porcelain centre with the towering cathedral, to Bourganeuf, the centre of the Templa Knights, and from the remains of the city gates in La Southerraine to Chalus, where Richard the Lionheart was fatally wounded.

For food lovers, there is plenty to fill a self catering Limousin holiday rental. Limousin specialises in sheep and the Limousin cattle bred in the region. Fish from the mountain streams and the fruit and mushrooms from the miles of forests and fruit plantations mean that there are plenty of local delicacies to experiment with in a self catering Limousin cottage, not to mention the cheese and gateaux famous in Limousin.

Limousin is a rural area, and therefore there is no end of fabulous walking, cycling and horse riding options. From a Limousin holiday property you also have the flexibility to take a kayak on one of the Mountain Rivers, white water raft or fish along the peaceful banks of the streams and lakes.

There are also a great variety of golf courses available in Limousin. Taking a Limousin gite or holiday cottage will let you enjoy the nine golf courses in Limousin, all of which are open to visitors all year round.

From a Limousin property, you can also enjoy hot air ballooning or tackling the world's largest maze of Le Labyrinthe, which holds within its magnitude of paths a number of clues to help you, and giant games to occupy you when you get lost!

Places to holiday in Limousin, France

The region is split into three departments, Correze, Haute-Vienne and Creuse. The tapestry museum in Aubusson is a huge attraction in Creuse, and has helped it become a major tourist centre. It is highly rural, covered in forestry, with Limousin holiday properties sparse, but idyllic.

Weather in Limousin, France

Summer temperatures in Limousin often reach over 32°C, sometimes even soaring to 40°C, and staying in a Limousin holiday rental will expose you to 2000 hours of sun per year. However, the winters are long, and snow is not uncommon, as Limousin is mainly an upland area.

Travel to Limousin, France

Limoges Airport (LIG) now receives regular flights from the UK. RyanAir have opened up this remote rural region, and the gems of rural France are being discovered with delight, and holiday cottages in Limousin have become hugely popular.

Lovely house, great location, huge tv screen for gamers.

House was perfect, the views were stunning, facilities great. View from the bath was outstanding. Kitchen lovely, sitting room was something to behold. Walks in the woods with my dog were very enjoyable and right on the doorstep. Tip:-bring a long rope if you have a dog so they don’t go wondering into the adjoining fields as the huge garden includes a meadow. We ate in the garden every night, and breakfast every morning. The night sky here was a joy to sit and stare at, a habit I got into every night. Fantastic place, no negatives, only positives, can’t wait to return.

Beautiful gite, lovely pool and garden with fantastic, helpful owners. Would definitely recommend

The property is lovely, with a lovely pool. There is a lovely, little balcony off the double bedroom, where you can watch the sunrise and observe the many birds, including jays and golden orioles. The owners are lovely, sourcing bikes for us when we enquired where to hire them. They even made us dinner when we had a power cut. I would recommend to couples and families alike. Although the gite itself is in a remote location, there's plenty to do in the area though you will need a car. All in all thank you Richard and Karen for a wonderful holiday
