Make a holiday rental home or villa in Le Vigan – Mont Aigoual, France your home away from home

The Le Vigan – Mont Aigoual region of Languedoc-Roussillon lies in Gard, a wonderfully rural region between the Cevennes Mountains and the Mediterranean. A magnificent starting point for any exploration of the Cevennes Mountains, a holiday rental property in the Le Vigan – Mont Aigoual area is also a prime destination for indulging in the best of Provencial lifestyles and pure relaxation in the French countryside.

Things to do in Le Vigan – Mont Aigoual, France

The deep valleys, soaring peaks and leafy plains of the Le Vigan – Mont Aigoual region are a dream for outdoor adventures. The Cevennes National Park is a wonderful place, with mountains carved by walking, riding, climbing and mountain biking trails of every sort. Mont Aigoual is the highest peak in Gard, and the views from the summit are sensational, reaching all the way to the sea. The walk to the top is strenuous, but by no means impossible for casual walkers or serious hikers alike.

The rivers of Gard are idyllic. Gushing along gullies, over waterfalls and across rapids, and filled with crystal clear waters, these rivers are ideal for sport. Some of the best walking and riding trails follow the river, and if you walk with a fishing rod, nothing could be more relaxing. Fishing permits are easily obtained from many of the tabacs in the area, and local advice is never far away! Canoeing, white water rafting and swimming opportunities are also in good supply.

The beaches of the Mediterranean can also be reached in well under an hour from a holiday rental property in the Le Vigan – Mont Aigoual region. There are countless beaches to choose from, many of which have been awarded the coveted European Blue Flag for cleanliness and safety. Water sports thrive in the warm, clear waters of the Mediterranean, which usually remain at temperatures of above 20°C until late October.

The Provencial culture still lives on remarkably strongly in the region, and you shall certainly not want for food or wine whilst staying in a Le Vigan – Mont Aigoual property. There are a great range of full bodied wines produced locally, and the cuisine is fantastic.

Places to visit on holiday in Le Vigan – Mont Aigoual, France

Valleraugue is a magnificent base for walking, mountain biking and horse riding holidays in the mountains. A holiday rental villa in Vallerague is also an ideal spot for fishing, with several rivers gushing down from the Cevennes Mountains, teeming with fish.

St-Laurent-le-Minier is a delightful village, right on the boundary between the foothills of the Cevennes and the coastal plain. The National Park is you back garden when in a St-Laurent-le-Minier property.

Le Vigan itself is an excellent cultural base. Wonderfully green and open, Le Vigan really comes to life during August and September, when the Fete d’Isis and the vast fair in Parc des Chataigniers roll into town. The restaurants, galleries and museums of Le Vigan are a perfect place to start any cultural exploration of the area.

Fabulous!

5 of 5
Fantastic location - beautiful views over the hills. The chalet was very comfortable and extremely well equipped. There was a lovely swimming pool. The owner, Mme Frezet, was kind and welcoming. The local town of Le Vignan was pleasant and had all the necessary shops etc. I was very sorry when I had to leave.

Lovley two weeks in La Porche

5 of 5
We have just returned from a lovely two week stay in the smaller of the adjoined houses (La Porche). It was just myself and my two teenage children. The house has a lovely rustic charm, with lovely views both during the day and at night when the milky way is extraordinarily vivid in all its glory. There is plenty of space, it is well appointed where necessary, has a lovely terrace setting for outdoor meals, and the private pool is clean and cool. Although joined to the larger house, La Maison Neuve, we still felt very private. The owner Ingrid was very helpful, both during the booking process and during the stay. Le Vigan is pleasant with two good supermarkets. And the surrounding countryside is perfect for walking (pack a sunhat in August), and local villages (particularly Breau) are charming. I particularly recommend the walk round the Cirque de Navacelles from Blandas, and to aid you I would also recommend the Cicerone Guide, Walking in the Cevennes by Janette Norton, with many walks in easy reach of the house. My teenage children (16 & 14), perhaps surprisingly, enjoyed the space and solitude enforced on them (wifi is available but I banned it during the day), and apart from the occasional spider, had great fun. The bat flying round the living room was one great distraction!
