The market town of Le Bugue lies on the banks of the River Vezere in Perigord Noir, France. The twisting streets are filled with beautiful, traditional Dordogne houses, which give Le Bugue a wonderfully authentic, relaxed atmosphere. Perigord Noir is a fantastic rural region with a rich culture and an enormous wealth of important pre-historic monuments to explore, but it is the relaxed way of life and beautiful countryside that really draw visitors to its rental villas and self catering gites.

Things to do on holiday in Le Bugue, France

Le Bugue is the crossroads of the Dordogne, and all the attractions of the Dordogne are well within reach of a Le Bugue property. There is no reason to leave Le Bugue once you arrive though. Its position on the banks of the River Vezere means that there is plenty of entertainment to be found within the town, and the many restaurants, bars and cafes take full advantage of the beautiful surroundings. Le Bugue is also home to the largest private aquarium in Europe, the Aquarium de Perigord Noir, which is an absolute must see for children and adults alike. Market day in Le Bugue falls on a Tuesday, and sees the whole town come to life with noises and smells, as the Le Bugue market is now the best in the region.

Canoeing along the River Vezere is a magnificently peaceful way to spend an afternoon from a holiday rental villa in Le Bugue, giving a unique viewpoint from which to explore the town and the countryside that surrounds the town. A little way outside Le Bugue is the fascinating Village du Bournat, a reconstruction of a typical 19th century French village, complete with local craftsmen plying their skills. Travel a little further afield and the countryside of Perigord Noir will open up to you to explore, whether by car, on foot or by bicycle.

History, and especially pre-history, is in rich supply in and around Le Bugue. The amazing caves of Bara-Bahau cut over 100m into the earth’s surface, and are adorned with pre-historic representations of boar, bear and bison which date back to around 15,000 BC. The colossal Gouffe de Proumeyssac Caves are the most impressive underground caves anywhere in France, with huge stalagmites and stalactites forming a stunning maze through the caverns. It is the Sorcerer’s Caves of Saint-Cirq that really excites visitors though, decorated with some fantastically detailed carvings, including a remarkably detailed human face.

Places to visit on holiday in Le Bugue, France

The closest town to Le Bugue is Les Eyzies de Tayac Sireuil, home to the oldest human skeleton ever found. Aside from its pre-historic claim to fame, Les Eyzies de Tayac Sireuil is a wonderful rural town to visit, surrounded by beautiful countryside just begging to be explored.

Weather in Le Bugue, France

Le Bugue enjoys a fantastically mild climate, with warm conditions arriving in May, lasting all the way through until October with daily temperatures in the high 20’s or low 30’s (°C) on a daily basis in between.

All that is French

4 of 5
Lovely, comfortable Gite, set in beautiful countryside, within easy reach of Le Bugue 2km away. Le Bugue has all the necessary facilities to enjoy a relaxing holiday, great supermarket, bars and resteraunts. The village is also near the places and attractions that are a must see in the region. Sarlat, Le Roque Gegaic, St Cyprien, Domme, Beynaic, etc... all within easy reach by car. Hosts Jenny and Marc were really friendly and couldn't do enough to ensure we had a great stay.

Lovely old French Cottage with all amenities and great swimming pool.

Lovely old typical French house. Very well equipped house, kitchen and garden. There were only two of us staying there so there was more than enough room. House was in a small hamlet of Le Bugue, about 45 mins walk into town, which was very quiet on the whole. Great place for children and young families. Unfortunately, someone in the village had a drone which flew/hovered over the house and swimming pool and surrounding area. Most annoying when you are relaxing by the pool as no doubt it had an on board camera, so you felt you were being spired on! Probably nothing the owner could do about it though.
