The property was clean and tidy with a very nice covered terrace to relax under and enjoy the relaxing view while eating lunch. The owners are very helpful and pleased to guide you, and make recommendations as to what to visit in the region. As you travel along the narrow road to the property you are flanked on both sides by vines, and you really know you are in La Belle France. A very restful and relaxing retreat.
The Gite is beautiful, very nicely finished and furnished and, unusually, there was very little required for our two week stay that wasn't already there. From kitchen foil to food storage and bin bags to a variety of teas and coffee pods for the Dolce Gusto machine or filters for the drip feed coffee machine. Our welcome pack on arrival included fresh eggs from the free range chickens that Tracy and Leigh keep as well as basic staples. Tracy offered us extra eggs whenever we needed them and they make the most wonderful omelettes with their golden yolks.
The Melon harvest was being done during our stay and Tracey and Leigh brought us fresh melons as well which were so sweet and juicy, I am still trying to work out how I can ferment and distil the juice! (adding the local Armagnac to Melon juice is really quite pleasant until I can get the metalwork built for the 'stil!)
The view from the front of the Gite is staggeringly beautiful. 180 degrees of sweeping vales and massive distant vistas. For those that rise early, the sun breaking across the valley is the best start to the day!
As mentioned Leigh and Tracey are very friendly and always available to offer advice on the local area and we enjoyed our chats around the pool, which is in itself a wonderful place to spend some time. Nia the Black Lab rescue dog often oversaw us swimming but I'm not sure she would have moved from the sunny lie-down to rescue anyone. Leigh recommended the village a La Romieu for a lunch and we had a great meal in the village centre followed by a fantastic visit in the Collegiate where we learned about all the cat statues in the village.
Moncrabeau is a gentle walk away and we noticed when walking back one day that when the birds quietened there was absolute silence. It is a fantastically rural setting but also a great point from which to explore the surrounding medieval and Roman buildings and settlements. You can also spend time in any of a number or Armagnac distilleries and we would recommend the Chateau de Cugnac in Condom for a lovely visit and tasting or their excellent Ryst-Dupeyron brand Armagnacs and Flocs.
Thank you Leigh and Tracy, Lucien and Nia for sharing your Gite and allowing us to have a wonderful holiday in the South of France.
