Make Holiday Rental Chalet in La Grave, France, Your Home Away From Home

La Grave is one of the most exciting ski resorts in France. It isn’t a normal resort like others in the Alps, it is a patrolled and lift serviced off-piste ski area, unique among its kind in Europe. The small town of La Grave is also interesting. The town is so high in the mountains that the traditional French wooden chalets were not possible due to a lack of trees. Instead the area displays more stone architecture for the houses and rental chalets, another reason why this quirky little French ski town is so unique. This town is very accessible, and there is a variety of self catering accommodation in La Grave ready for holiday makers.

Things to do on Holiday in La Grave, France

The town services the resort, which is among the most exciting in Europe, which makes holidays in La Grave appeal to the very adventurous. With over 2,100m of skiing, La Grave has a lot of skiing available right from the chalet. The ski area is reachable through the gondola style lifts and a button lift at the top. From the top, it is possible to ski down the back of the mountain to the 2 Alps resort. Keep in mind that none of the ski area is actively maintained through grooming or avalanche control, it is only patrolled. So the skiing at La Grave is exceptional, and reserved for only serious skiers and snowboarders.

Places to Visit on Holiday in La Grave, France

In the heart of the Alps, La Grave is a great place to get out and adventure. In the winter, the surrounding mountains make for great ice climbing. Veteran British Mountaineer Terry Taylor used lead ice climbing adventures in the area, and put the place on the map for many keen mountaineers looking for an exciting challenge. In the summer the surrounding area still features many glacier walks and hikes. La Grave is not far from Les Deux Alps ski resort, one of the older resorts in France, and here the usual amenities of the ski resort can be found.

Weather in La Grave, France

The weather this far into the Alps is highly changeable, so when off and adventuring take adequate attire for all conditions. In the winter, it is understandably cold. Highs sometimes get above freezing, but as most people are here to enjoy great skiing, the coldness ensures nice dry snow. In the summer, the weather gets quite warm and highs average at about 27 degree Celsius. It can be a little bit wet, in the summer expect rain on 10-12 days per month, but totalling about 60mm. In the winter, snow will fall more or less the same amount. Keep in mind that the most precipitation is in the Spring, so if it is a cold spring that means great snow!

Travel to La Grave, France

The best way to get to La Grave is via Grenoble. There are other routes that can be taken by car, but in the winter all others are risky as they involve high mountain passes. From Grenoble, there is a coach service that connects to La Grave, or a pre-arranged taxi can also make the trip. Grenoble Airport (GRB) is accessible via easyJet and Ryanair from several airports in the UK including Birmingham (BHX), Bristol (BRS), London Gatwick (LGW), London Stansted (STN) and Liverpool (LPL), with winter seasons flights also from Edinburgh (EDI).

Beautiful location in small village with fabulous views. Locally based owners friendly/helpful

4 of 5
Location fabulous and able to eat outside with views up the romanche valley with its dramatic peaks. Also very close to great walking opportunities (eg Le Meije) and cycling (cols de lauteret and Galibier are very close. Inside house is a bit tired. Kitchen a bit small and not well laid out but living space good. We were just 2 people. Plenty of room for 4 but 6 might be a challenge downstairs. Decor a bit shabby downstairs and bathroom is old with only bath and shower attachment with no curtain or screen so can't shower too easily. All that said this is quite a bargain especially if you are a party of 4+ so can't be too critical of the facilities. All the basics are there and with good weather you will be mostly outside which is where this place scores highest. Overall we had a great time.
