Meanwhile Toulon sits just a few minutes to the west of holiday rentals in La Garde, and boasts an attractive old town, as well as a number of sights relating to French naval history. Among the most popular of these is the Arsenal, which dates to the late 17th Century and features a host of important works of art.

Homely house in a wonderful location

4 of 5
Four of us have just returned from villa La Garde where we spent 9 nights. The house is is really homely and comfortable, spotlessly clean and well equipped. The local boulangerie/pattisserie sells buttery croissants, pastries and cakes and was well used by us.. The large town of Toulon was an unexpected gem with its daily, huge market, vibrant and colourful. The port and harbour area is also lovely, with plenty of places to eat and drink and watch the world go by and the boats come in and out. Enjoy some delicious ice cream or crepes there (try the creme de marron crepe with grand marnier and chantilly cream - superb). We enjoyed plenty of beach life at Mourillon (5 mins by car) where the beaches are clean and the swimming safe. We also visited the local beach on foot (15 mins walk) which is really charming with its small harbour and fishing cottages. Heading east in the car you can visit Hyeres and the Golden Isles within 30 mins. Take a picnic and a 20 min ferry to Pouquorelles island and go for a swim from one of the idyllic white sandy beaches. Further east the old hill top village of Bormes de Mimosa is indescribably pretty and a great place to have lunch and enjoy the views. I would only suggest one thing which would improve the property; better wardrobes and hanging space in bedrooms 2 an 3. Thank you for a great stay and a memorable holiday. Jane, Tony, Jacqueline and Mick (Newcastle upon Tyne).
