On holiday at a villa in La Bastide-des-Jourdans you might set off on tours of the classic perched mountain villages, visit astounding natural landmarks like the Verdon Gorge, or hike your way through rugged mountain scenery woven with human history. The time that you do spend at your holiday home in La Bastide-des-Jourdans will be full of relaxation – taking dips in your own private pool or enjoying an al fresco meal with unforgettable views from your garden.

Things to do

-Outdoor recreation. La Bastide-des-Jourdans is within the Luberon Natural Regional Park, which encompasses a mountainous landscape covered in pine woodland, and preserving lots of architectural heritage. Discover old chateaux and stone chapels along twisting hilly paths. If you’re up for some golf then Luberon’s own club is close by, with a demanding mountain course in a classic Provençal landscape.

-Picturesque villages. La Bastide-des-Jourdans is a handsome old village, in a region that is rich in 14th Century architecture and home to countless “perched” mountain villages. The older part of La Bastide-des-Jourdans is protected by original medieval walls, and boasts historic gates, a castle and a couple of beautiful churches. The nearby town of Manosque is also from the 1300s and has two imposing medieval gates leading to an old centre of typical Provençal houses and hidden squares.

-Gorges du Verdon. France’s version of the Grand Canyon, the Verdon Gorge has been carved by the eponymous river over millions of years, creating a truly arresting landscape. At points the ravine reaches depths of more than 700 metres, and people flock to the canyon for walking and climbing trips. It’s also possible to kayak or raft along the river with local adventure tourism companies.

-Coast. Another natural wonder within a comfortable drive of La Bastide-des-Jourdans can be found just southeast of Marseille. The Calanques form a remarkable coastal landscape of fjords, promontories, rocky outcrops and cliffs that can be experienced on foot or by boat. If it’s beachtime you want then you could try the small but perfectly formed beach at Cassis, backed by rugged cliffs and with seductive clear waters.

-Cuisine. Local cuisine draws on the freshest seasonal produce. The olive oil cultivated in this region has AOC protection, while the nearby town of Apt is well-known for the high quality of its cherries in summer, which have been used to make candied fruits with artisan techniques for many centuries. The largest local market is in Manosque on Saturdays, and here you get your hands on some sublime fruit, vegetables, meats, cheeses, olive oil and wines.

Weather in La Bastide-des-Jourdans

La Bastide-des-Jourdans holiday rentals are in a Mediterranean Climate zone. Thanks to the mountainous setting, the village also avoids the famous Mistral wind that blows from north to south. Between May and September the weather is warm here, often getting above 30 degrees in July and August. In mid-summer there’s almost no rain either. Winters are generally mild, but can be chilly on certain days in December and January. Temperatures drop just below freezing at night, and rise to eight or nine degrees by day.

Travel to La Bastide-des-Jourdans

Marseille Provence Airport (MRS) is the destination to use if you want to get to your holiday home in La Bastide-des-Jourdans from Britain. It’s an important airport for the region with lots of traffic from the UK, including low-cost airlines and flag carriers like British Airways. The airport is around an hour southwest of the village of La Bastide-des-Jourdans, and you can use the A51 and D9 to complete your journey. As the village is in a relatively isolated upland setting and public transport connections are few, a car is recommended.

Well equipped house with lovely owners

5 of 5
We had a very pleasant and relaxing week in this house. The owners were very kind and accommodating including the lovely dog who would sit outside with us. We went to the museum of pre-histories at Verdon which was fascinating and very well presented including the English language commentary. We were also treated to a display of tombstoning at Verdon gorge where they had boats for hire. We didn’t use the car much as we could walk to the supermarket and also to the centre of Manosque which is picturesque. We loved having lunch there and the Lebanese restaurant and Les Deux Freres were particularly good. We wanted to relax and so did not move around much but there was lots to interest us had we wanted it. Altogether a lovely place to be

Peace and tranquility in the French countryside

5 of 5
We’ve just returned from 2 weeks in the sunny south of France. Sabine and René were lovely hosts and couldn’t do enough for us. The accommodation had everything we needed and was clean and comfortable. We very much appreciated the air con as the temperature was steadily in the 30s. There’s plenty to do and many places to visit in the vicinity, as well as the surrounding forest to explore when we didn’t feel like driving. We have returned from our holiday feeling thoroughly recharged and I would definitely stay again if I was in the area. Thank you for a lovely holiday, René and Sabine!
