The small village of Jausiers (pop. 1000) is about 5 miles up the Ubaye Valley from Barcelonnette. The surrounding mountains are capped with snow until May and a tall belltower in the hillside cemetery is a local landmark.

Hiking trails run through the hills on either side of the Upper Ubaye River or curve down through the Vallon du Lau. Visit the market at Barcelonnetta for local supplies and dine out in one of the terrace cafés and restaurants that serve regional cuisine. A stroll around the village should bring you to the Chateau des Magnana, in Mexican style and the 18th century Jesuit Church with its two sundials. Other activities include cycling, photography, painting and nature spotting in this lovely area. Shopping, excellent dining and sports such as parascending, water skiing and jet skiing can all be enjoyed in Nice.

An interesting place to visit, not far from your Jausiers holiday rental, is the old fortress of Redouble de Berwick. It is very pretty and well maintained but there is nothing to see inside. Other worthwhile attractions are L’Abbeye de Boscodon, 14 miles away, and Les Ecrins National Park, along with the Gorges du Verdon which are stunning natural sights. A day in the lovely city of Nice offers a walk along the Promenade des Anglais, the Botanical Gardens at the Parc Floral and the Notre Dame Basilica.

The best way to reach Jausiers is by picking up a hire car and driving inland from the airport along the D2205. Allow 2 ½ hours for the journey. For those wishing to arrive by train, the fast TGV trains connect with the Eurostar from London, making it easy to get to Nice. The nearest train station is at Cannes.

Great house, great location

Christian's house has everything you could possibly want in a superb location. Cable television, comfy sofas, every possible cooking utensil, masses of crockery, lots of hot water on tap, a strong wifi connection, bags of room, its all there. The photos of the house are completely accurate and it is as nice as it looks. A big plus is the broad balcony on the first floor (where the cooking, dining and living areas are located) providing wonderful views of the mountains across the valley and a great place to eat. The utility room downstairs is useful for the storage of bikes should you be a cyclist (like me) and the location right at the foot of the Vars and Bonnette is very convenient. The Allos, Cayolle passes and Pra Loup are all very close too amongst other lesser known gems. For a modest fee Christian also provides good quality bed linen and towels, a real bonus if space is at a premium in your car. The proximity to the swimming lake in Jausiers is also a big plus if not all of you are mountain walkers/cyclists. It is a nice place to go and the wakeboard tow at one end is a big attraction. The location higher up the Ubaye valley is beneficial if you are a mountain walker as the Maurin and Larche valleys and their higher peaks that much closer. If Jausiers is where you want to go for your holidays. I would give this house strong consideration.

Clean, well equipped, good location for slopes,

Owner is fabulous and friendly. The apartment has bunk beds in a separate area with a big wardrobe for clothes and shoes. The shower is hot and powerful and the toilet is separate which is good. The lounge has a comfy sofa bed with the kitchen attached - including a dishwasher with lots of plates and cutlery etc so no way of running out. There is a dining table for 6 and a separate double bed room. There is also a balcony facing the front of the property. As a family of 4 we had a wonderful holiday and would recommend this property - its great value for money and worked well for out ski trip to Vars. Short walk to the slopes and shops and a large ski locker easily held 3 sets of skis and boots and a snowboard. We only booked 2 weeks prior to going and it was so easy to book and the owner contacted us straight away to organise the details.
