Make A Holiday Rental Cottage in Ile de Brehat, France, Your Home Away From Home

If the idea of a small, French Island renowned as a bird and wildlife sanctuary where cars are banned sounds like an ideal place for a vacation, then a holiday rental cottage in Ile de Brehat is just for you. This fascinating place is actually two islands joined by a bridge, and is often called the most beautiful part of Brittany. Summer is the most popular time of year for tourists from both mainland France and beyond, and self catering accommodation in Ile de Brehat is at a premium during this time. Booking well in advance is therefore essential.

Things to Do on Holiday in Ile de Brehat, France

Activities on the island are not as all-encompassing as other parts of France, but of course, its other aspects more than make up for this! The island is both small enough to walk from one end to the other within an hour, but also big enough to find a new walk every day. Bicycles are available to rent from the harbour if you would prefer to get around on two wheels. The beaches are always within easy access, and so sunbathing and swimming are all possibilities. Remember, however, that the water is a little cooler here than if you were on the Mediterranean!

Places to Visit on Holiday in Ile de Brehat, France

If you are on holidays in Ile de Brehat for more than a week, then you may wish to travel further afield, and see some of the attractions on the mainland. The immediate coastline on the mainland is known as the Pink Granite Coast, and is definitely worth time spent exploring. Inland, the medieval town of Dinard is a must see, with its 13th and 14th century partially timbered buildings and impressive walls. You can easily spend a day here, wandering through its cobbled streets and visiting the craft markets. If visiting the mainland, you may wish to hire a car in order to make the most of your time there.

Weather in Ile de Brehat, France

The normal weather that you can expect whilst on holidays in Ile de Brehat is one of a warm summer and mild winter. Certainly, it is not as warm as the Med, but average daily temperatures through July and August regularly peak over 20 degrees Celsius, making it warm, but not outrageously so. Rain can be an issue, and so go expecting a similar climate that you would to the south of England at the same time of year. During the winter, the average minimum temperatures rarely drop below 2 or 3 degrees Celsius. The island itself is much quieter during this time of year, with very few holiday makers, and just the three hundred or so residents.

Travel to Ile de Brehat, France

The Ile de Brehat is only accessible by ferry, and the journey from the mainland takes from between ten minutes and half an hour depending on conditions. An important point here to keep in mind, is that as there are no vehicles in the island, you should only bring what you can comfortably carry or wheel behind you. If travelling from the UK, you can drive and catch a ferry from the UK to France by landing at St Malo, Caen, Cherbourg or Le Havre. If flying, then Rennes (RNS) is probably the airport of choice, where Flybe operates routes from UK cities such as Birmingham (BHX) and Exeter (EXT).

A perfect hideaway!

5 of 5
We were looking for an escape over the Xmas period and decided to visit Brittany with Mystique, our travelling cat ! Anne and Frank's' cottage was perfect for us! Beautifully appointed cottage with everything we needed... Log burning fire was so appreciated-puss curled up cosy every evening! Upstairs bedroom so very comfortable with en-suite ensured good nights' sleep. Despite it being December we had lovely sunny blue skies and enjoyed so many walks (and runs for my husband Jack) along the coastal paths and down on to Bonaparte beach (my favourite!) Enjoyed exploring Plouha and surrounds... Binic was a favourite with fantastic beach and harbour wall walk.... all in all a wonderful 5 days in a very special place with lovely owners nearby- thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would love to return. A huge thank you to our hosts! Fiona, Glasgow

Lovely house in beautiful location

5 of 5
The house is even better than the pictures portray. There are lots of extra touches that truly make this home from home. The house was light, cosy and comfortable. It suited people of all ages - the basement den was a fab place for the teenagers to hang out and the pool table that converted to a table tennis table was a great unexpected addition. The house is perfectly situated for a short stroll into town for fresh bread or to the beach with the array of good restaurants on offer there. We all had a great time and hopefully can come back in the summer time to enjoy the pool as well.

A fun, contemporary and chic cottage, recently renovated for simple living a deux

5 of 5
We were warmly welcomed by Soizic, who gave us all the help we needed to make the most of our break in the 'love nest'. This was a wonderfully varied location. We enjoyed an idyllic September week, warm enough to swim. The spring tides were ideal to walk far out on the sands, to explore the family's oyster farm and find shell-fish almost anywhere locally. We took at ferry to Brehat; walked to nearby medieval Abbey de Beaufort at the start of the 1800km pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella, meandered round Paimpol and took the car to the Rose Granite coast. All other days we kayaked, travelling 10-30 mins by car to reach excellent sea/estuary/river paddling from scenic beaches (but, tides are challenging, homework obligatory). Enough space to store the kayaks safely on the terrace, a hosepipe and ample space for our gear made this cottage an excellent choice. At the end of the day the spotless cottage was beautiful, civilised and comfortable, with heating under the slate flooring, a great big shower and cleverly-designed and equipped kitchen. The view of clouds, sea, sand and rocks from the tiny Velux window upstairs was ever-changing but always sensational. Having this cottage as our base contributed the difference between a good holiday and a great one!
