Make a holiday rental property or accommodation in Hautes Alpes, France your home away from home

The Hautes Alpes department of southern France is a magnificent rural region consisting of Alpine peaks, deep valleys and wide plains. Tourism has largely missed the Hautes Alpes, making it a truly authentic destination for a holiday, with unspoilt countryside stretching far into the horizon and a cheerful atmosphere which is unlike that of anywhere on the beaten path of French tourism. Taking accommodation in Hautes Alpes provides visitors an unrivalled mix of Provincial sun and Alpine scenery.

Things to do on holiday in Hautes Alpes, France

In winter, the ski resorts of Hautes Alpes draw visitors from across Europe to test the slopes, from the high speed downhill pistes to thigh burning mogul fields. There are over 30 Hautes Alpes ski resorts, the vast majority of which are built around authentic alpine towns, filled with gourmet restaurants serving delicacies with an undeniably local flavour, Alpine chalet style accommodation and magnificent little shops. The huge National Park de Ecrin is home to almost 50% of all the species of plant and animal found in France, including ibex, marmots and chamois, and is crossed with over 1,00km of footpaths.

In summer, the glorious Alpine scenery is a huge draw. Visitors arrive from all overEuropeto go walking, riding, mountain biking, climbing and para-gliding in the mountains, meaning that Hautes Alpes property is in high demand all year round. The rivers which cascade down from the Alps before slowing and widening across the plains also provide visitors to accommodation in Hautes Alpes with a huge range of leisure options. White water rafting and kayaking thrive during the spring when the melt waters fill river channels, turning them into gushing white water courses. The low land rivers attract those hoping to go sailing or canoeing during the summer months when the climate turns warm too.

The gastronomy of the Hautes Alpes department is excellent, and has a distinct flavour from many other regions in France. The cheeses and honeys produced in the Hautes Alpes mountains are full of flavour, and make taking a self catering property in Hautes Alpes a genuine delight.

Places to visit on holiday in Hautes Alpes, France

The Hautes Alpes ski resort of Serre Chevalier is one of the most popular places to take holiday rental accommodation in Hautes Alpes. Boasting the second largest ski area in the world, Serre Chevalier is a magnificent destination for any standard of skier or snowboarder. Despite having over 300 days of sunshine a year, the snow record in Serre Chevalier is remarkable, and the scenery only adds to an already sensational skiing holiday.

Montgenevre is another excellent skiing resort on the huge Milky Way ski domain. It is a very small, traditional resort, just a few miles from the Italian boarder. Skiing is the main priority from a Hautes Alpes property in Montgenevre, as there is little après-ski to enjoy.

The ancient town of Embrun is a stunning town, which provides a sensational base for walking, riding and mountain biking holidays in Hautes Alpes, and during the spring, the Durance River is filled with white water rafts and kayaks.

Lovely chalet

5 of 5
A very nice chalet, plenty of room for the 12 of us. Well equipped, lovely outdoor area. And the owners returned our deposit very quickly.

The chalet was everything we could have wanted for our skiing holiday.

We have just had a great holiday staying at chalet des Pleiades in risoul. Everything was straightforward including all communication with Christian, the owner, and Stephanie, who organises the keys. The chalet itself was very well-equipped and cosy. Everything has been thought of - all cooking facilities, washing machine and dishwasher and storage facilities for ski equipment. The location is perfect for a quick ski down the slope to the ski-lifts/ meeting point for lessons. We would not hesitate to book this property again for a skiing trip to the French Alps.
