Make a holiday rental apartment or villa in Haute-Bearn / Soule - Oloron, Aquitaine, France your home away from home

Haute-Bearn (Bearn-Pyrenees) is a region of absolutely breathtaking mountain landscapes on the border between France and Spain. Located in the Pyrenees-Atlantiques region, Haute-Bearn is a sensational place to escape into the unspoilt countryside, as well as immerse yourself in the amazing culture, which has developed over many years into an irresistible mix of French, Spanish, Provencial and Catalan influences.

Things to do in Haute-Bearn, France

There is something for everyone to enjoy during a self catering holiday in Haute-Bearn. The amazing mountain scenery is adorned with charming medieval villages, many of which cling gamely to sheer cliffs and dramatic escarpments, many of which are filled with charming, traditional Haute-Bearn cottages and villas as well as tiny family restaurants and timeless cafes offering some of the finest views in the whole of France.

The sensational landscapes make taking a Haute-Bearn property an absolute dream for anyone with a love for the great outdoors. The mountain walking, hill trekking, mountain biking, parasailing, rock climbing, horse riding and white water rafting during spring and summer. The two rivers that carve the region, d’Aspe and d’Ossau, are wonderful fishing rivers too. The unbelievable sight of the Needles of Ansabere are certainly worth seeing from any holiday rental in Haute-Bearn. During the winter months, these mountains are a silent skiing haven, especially in ski resorts like Gourette. Nature thrives in the stunning Parc National des Pyrenees, with an astonishing array of creatures, from brown bear to chamois, griffon vulture to Royal Eagle.

During the summer months, the allure of the beach can be overpowering. Although there can be few things more relaxing than sitting beside your private Haute-Bearn villa’s pool looking out over the sensational mountain scenery, a day on the beach is always hugely rewarding. The closest beaches are those of Biarritz, which are known for their fine sands and excellent surfing conditions.

Places to visit on holiday in Haute-Bearn, France

Gourette is a magnificent, modern ski resort in the French Pyrenees. With some wonderful downhill pistes, which run through open slopes and pine forests, boarder-cross trails for snowboarding, two ski schools and a snowpark, a rental chalet in Gourette is ideal for family skiing holidays with empty pistes.

Laruns is the administrative centre of Haute-Bearn, and an ideal location for a full exploration of the area. It is a perfect place to buy food, as some of the world’s (possibly!) finest butchers are found in Laruns, as well as a great number of places of interest to explore.

Les Eaux Bonnes is the oldest ski resort in the Pyrenees, and is also a fine spa town throughout the year. Les Eaux Bonnes is a beautiful resort, where you can ski or walk by day and sooth weary limbs with leisurely, long suppers and wonderful spa sessions.

Travel to Haute-Bearn, France

Pau’s Pyrenees Airport (PUF) is within around 30km of a holiday rental property in Haute-Bearn. There are regular flights from Bristol (BRS) andLondonStansted (STN), provided by Ryanair. A hire car is strongly recommended to anyone wishing to really explore the mountains and the coastline of Aquitaine.

Lovely spacious gite

Lovely property in a great location. Ken and Shona made us very welcome and were a mine of information on the local area. The donkeys and the cat were a massive hit with the boys

Delightful cottage in lovely village and setting at Lourdios Ichere (Not Issor but close)

4 of 5
We were made immediately welcome by owner Michel who gave us a quick tour of everything and some background to the cottage. It is very well set out and everything clean and bright. It is situated adjacent to a babbling stream, with trout and birds to watch. Our only initial problem was that as Australian visitors we do not carry bed linen with us, but Michel quickly organised that. We also found the bright street lights strange, but good shutters fix that issue at night and it is a heavenly peaceful place. The village is gorgeous, very pretty and friendly, tucked into a fold of the mountains, and extremely interesting. If you get a chance, go visit the Ecomusee up the road 800 metres from the cottage. There you can hear how this village came into being in a very different way from many other older established settlements, and also about the rise of women shepherds in the region. There are many good walks to be found, and good shopping a bit of a drive away - there are no shops in the village. The nearest big town is Oloron Ste Marie, which has a great market and some friendly cafes and eateries, along with beautiful old architecture and the river. In the opposite direction at Accus, not far away from Lourdios, you can go and shop, then watch hang gliders coming down a mountain while enjoying a good meal (along with the resident cat). The black currant tart was to die for. All up a great place to stay, I would recommend it to anyone.

Great stay in a great village

5 of 5
I had a pleasant stay here in September 2016! Also very clear communication with the owner (first through mail, on the day of arrival by phone). I arrived at around 10pm and was welcomed by the friendly parents of the owner. I spent 14 days in the appartment (which is more a house really, only the groundfloor is a small grocery store, the entrance of the property is on the first floor - access by stairs on the outside of the house). I wanted to explore the Pyrenees by bicycle and on running shoes. The location is situated near the square of Laruns, with everything a walk away (2 bakeries, 2 butchers, a supermarket, restaurant, grocery store, tabac store,...). The property was clean, the kitchen was well equipped. I didn't miss anything but I have to admit I'm not the fanciest cook. The internet connection was fast! No frustrations there. It's also a cosy livingroom, comfortable seats. Exactly as what the listing shows. The bathroom was ok, a large bath. No problems filling it with hot water! Since I stayed there alone it wasn't a problem putting my bike in the entrance, but it's probably not ideal if there are more bicycles to store during the night - although it would be possible to put them next to the fireplace in the living room. Laruns itself is ideally located if you want to do outdoor activities. I enjoyed every day of it!
