Things to do

-Local heritage. Gonfaron is surrounded by picturesque towns and villages, packed with historical interest. But one of the standout sights nearby is l’Abbaye du Thoronet, a Cistercian abbey from the 12th Century. It’s in an impressive state of preservation and displays great architectural expertise - for instance, the acoustics of the church were designed to complement the monks singing by creating long echoes.

-Natural scenery. Gonfaron is in the northern foothills of the Massif des Maures, a coastal mountain range that protects a huge diversity of wildlife, from boars, lizards and tortoises to peregrine falcons and a host of waterfowl in wetland areas. La Plaine des Maures is just to the east of Gonfaron and is a natural reserve encompassing a river system, perfect for tranquil walks and nature spotting.

-Gorges du Verdon. This remarkable natural landmark is compared to America’s Grand Canyon. People come to this spectacular stretch of the Verdon River for hikes, bike rides and kayak trips. If you’re a climber then it’s an essential day out, as the canyon offers countless pillars, sheer cliffs and walls, with more than 1000 different courses across a wide range of difficulty grades. The gorge is 25 kilometres in length and at one point has a depth of 700 metres.

-Food and drink. The market day is Thursday in Gonfaron – you can pick up fabulous fruit and vegetables, as well as buy some regional specialities like lavender oil, honey, goat cheese, dry fruit and nuts. The local olive oil is of premium quality and has earned AOC designation, while the Var department has two AOC wine regions, and many of the local vineyards produce rosé wines.

-Riviera. Celebrated resorts like Toulon, Hyères and Saint-Tropez are all within a reasonable drive of Gonfaron. One of the closest beaches is Almanarre on the Giens Peninsula, which is beautifully unspoiled location and frequented by windsurfers and other water sports enthusiasts for its lively breezes. From Hyères you can embark on a tour of the Îles d’Or, an archipelago of four islands much loved for their pristine nature.

Lovely house in Collobrieres

5 of 5
Agree with other reviews, the spec of the house is very good. Air con in the bedrooms made a big difference. The pool is excellent with a good aspect. Plenty of sun loungers and places in the shade. Valentin and Barbara were great hosts both with local information and introduced me to the local wine co-op which is also excellent. They kindly posted my daughters shoes that we had left behind. Collobrieres is a classic Provence town, nice atmosphere, there are some good restaurants where the food is local and great value. There were numerous festivals during our visit. Area is very good for road biking btw, very popular. In summary, a perfect base to explore the area or laze by the pool. Easily accommodates eight.

A super holiday home

5 of 5
This is a wonderful property. It is very well equipped with everything you need for a wonderful stay. We stayed for two weeks in July and everything was perfect. We would love to be able to come back again. The photos do not do the property and pool justice, we spent several very lazy days by the large pool and ate breakfast out on the cool verandah by the back door every morning. The beaches at Toulon and St. Tropez are only 45 minutes away and the bakery in Flassans provided us with daily delicious bread and cakes. What a lovely relaxing holiday.
