Gargas, France

Not to be confused with Gargas in the Haute-Garonne department of France, Gargas in the Vaucluse department is a comune that has expanded rapidly in recent years, and is now a relatively popular option for those seeking a holiday rental base in the heart of the Provence. Many buildings in the area date back to the Middle Ages, and the village certainly has an ‘old world’ feel about it – though it is the earth-coloured pigment ochre for which Gargas is most famous, and visitors can even visit the old quarries during their stay.

Things to do in Gargas, France

Gargas has grown in size over the last 10-15 years, and now encompasses a number of smaller hamlets in the area. The village is best known for its still-operational ochre quarries – making it the only village of this type in the Vaucluse department. Some of the these quarries can be visited by the general public, though it is advised to consult the local tourist information office beforehand to check exactly which ones offer this facility. Remember not to wear white clothes during your tour – the reddish-brown pigment can get everywhere!

Gargas has several old buildings and historical sites around its picturesque centre, the highlight of which is the 17th century church. The comune also has a respectable selection of amenities, and a pleasant full day can be spent wandering the narrow streets and shopping in the local stores. After a day or two you will likely want to get out into the surrounding countryside, and this unspoilt part of the Luberon offers many days of hiking, walking, horse riding, fishing and cycling opportunities.

Places to visit on holiday in Gargas, France

The local speciality is melon, which will almost certainly be the freshest and juiciest you have ever tried!

Perfect Luberon hideaway

5 of 5
A fantastic property that more than lives up to the photos. Great location for the major attractions in Luberon (Gordes etcs) and a perfect bolthole for relaxing, cooking, and soaking up the sun. Ultra-modern interior, well-appointed kitchen, great beedrooms, and a very warm welcome from Cyril and Julie. Could have spent the whole summer here.

The pictures looked like just what we wanted- it was so much more what we wanted than I knew to want

We enjoyed every meal outside. We didn't use it, but the kitchen was well equipped for larger groups. Terrific boulangerie in Gargas. Swim, eat, relax, listen to the cicadas, watch the stars. Just perfection. (If you despise ants outdoors- their presence may bother you, but they stayed outside which is all I ask of ants).
