Make a holiday cottage in Forcalquier your home away from home

With HomeAway you can pick out the ideal holiday home in Forcalquier, a beautiful hillside town on the edge of the Luberon Natural Park. All around are lavender fields, olive groves and beautiful old villages. And at a cottage in Forcalquier you can revel in your own small patch of rural Provence. Most rentals here are restored barns and farmhouses set in large, enclosed grounds. Many have comforts like pools and outdoor barbecues, as well as the 21st Century convenience of Internet connectivity. Forcalquier cottages bring you authentic rural architecture coupled with the functionality of a contemporary home.

Things to do

-Forcalquier. The town is built around on steep hillsides and is packed with interesting little sights. On Place Saint-Michel you’ll find a Renaissance fountain from the 16th Century. At the top of the hill is the site of a former citadel, long since replaced by a pretty chapel with far-reaching views. At the Municipal Museum you can see artefacts from the Gallo-Roman era, and if you come to town on a Monday you’ll catch the market at Place du Bourguet.

-Natural scenery. North of Forcalquier, on the way to Fontienne, is a strange landscape of rocks that have been thinned at the base by erosion, giving them the appearance of giant mushrooms. These are known as Les Mourres, and some reach heights of 25 metres. Another fascinating quirk of the local countryside are bories – small and historic stone huts built as shelters for farmers.

-Outdoor recreation. Activities available in Forcalquier’s surroundings include bike riding, hikes and horseback riding. There are four equestrian centres and more than 40 kilometres of bridle paths locally. The town connects with four long-distance GR hiking trails, but there are also 50 marked trails for short hikes and 470 kilometres of paths for family strolls. The terrain here is rugged hills, wheat fields, olive groves and large swathes of lavender.

-Food and drink. The herbs cultivated in the countryside here are put to all kinds of uses – there’s a distillery in Forcalquier producing a range of appetizers and aperitifs. A fantastic goat cheese is also made nearby - Banon is a soft cheese, wrapped in brown chestnut leaves and tied with a raffia ribbon. Many of the olive groves in the area produce oil that was protected with AOC status in 2007.

-Sisteron. One of the remarkable things about this town is its setting, on the banks of the Durance River and with a precipitous and jagged mountainside in the background. On this craggy slope sits a fantastic piece of military heritage, fortified by Vauban in the 17th Century; The Citadel, commanding wonderful views, is defended by historic ramparts and contains a chapel. Further down, on the streets of Sisteron is the Cathedral of Notre-Dame from the 1100s.

Weather in Forcalquier

Forcalquier has a climate that is normal for inland Mediterranean regions. Summers are hot, dry and long, lasting from May to late-September. Throughout this period daily highs range from 23 to 31 degrees, and rainfall is scarce until the very end of the season. If you come to holiday accommodation in Forcalquier in spring or autumn then you can look forward to moderate conditions, with temperatures reaching the upper teens. Winters are cool or mild, with not much rain and highs of eight or nine degrees in January.

Travel to Forcalquier

Despite being relatively isolated, Forcalquier has quick and convenient transport links. If you’re flying from Britain the airport for Forcalquier holiday homes is Marseille Provence (MRS). There are lots of connections from the UK, with a large range of airlines. Forcalquier is about an hour from Marseille on the A51 autoroute - you can take exit 19 at Brillane, which is only seven kilometres from the town. LER bus line 26 also serves the town from the airport. By train there’s a station close to Forcalquier at Brillane-Prayer with regional TER links to Marseille.

A beautiful gite in the heart of Haute Provence.

4 of 5
This is a beautiful gite in a lovely area surrounded by fields and lovely views of the mountains and the hilltop village of Lurs. The owners are very friendly and the gite is brand new and very well-designed, clean and comfortable. Everything being on one floor with three external doors from the loung/kitchen gave a light and airy feel - you could watch the sun rise and sun set! In time, with the planned landscaping of the garden/driveway it will be almost perfect. We had chosen a gite with airconditioning on the HomeAway site but at the moment this hasn't got airconditioning so do double check with the owners if this is a priority for you, it was our only negative. The larger apartment that is attached does appear to have airconditioning. It is a very well positioned gite with good access roads to many places of interest beyond the traditional Provencial towns of western Provence. Walking, cycling, medieval village and town exploring and of course the weather!

Well equipped house with lovely owners

5 of 5
We had a very pleasant and relaxing week in this house. The owners were very kind and accommodating including the lovely dog who would sit outside with us. We went to the museum of pre-histories at Verdon which was fascinating and very well presented including the English language commentary. We were also treated to a display of tombstoning at Verdon gorge where they had boats for hire. We didn’t use the car much as we could walk to the supermarket and also to the centre of Manosque which is picturesque. We loved having lunch there and the Lebanese restaurant and Les Deux Freres were particularly good. We wanted to relax and so did not move around much but there was lots to interest us had we wanted it. Altogether a lovely place to be
