We had a lovely 2 week stay. The château is comfortable and spacious and full of character, with everything you need. For shopping, the intermarché wasn't too far away, in the town of Charlieu which was delightful. Definitely recommend eating at Le Saint Louis in Charlieu, or cook for yourself in the wonderful kitchen of the château.
The house is large and fronts on to a fairly busy road. The back has a couple of gravel courtyards with various areas to eat (we chose the area under the wisteria). There are a number of outhouses and a large barn with deck chairs, table tennis and barbecue equipment.
The garden is very large and has secure parking behind electric gates, there are also chickens and vegetables which are looked after by a gardener. There is a salt water pool which has a retractable cover and is clean and decent sized approx 7 ft deep.
Inside there is a kitchen which has a lot of equipment however the design is poor and there is no preparation area. The owner has plans to refurbish. There is a large range cooker, washing machine and dishwasher. There are two sitting rooms and a large dinning room. There is also a utility room which has an ironing board and boiler and downstairs shower. Beyond this is an annex double room, but would not want to use.
On the first floor there are three double/twin bedrooms with sinks and bidets in two and a sink in the third. There is a bathroom (no shower screen) and a shower room.
On the second floor is a variety of rooms with three bedrooms and a bathroom again no shower screen.
The house is sparsely furnished and is in need of refurbishing with some walls having old damaged wall paper, however it was clean and presentable when we arrived. The owner is available and lives in Lyon however we had no issues. There is no television on site and while there is broadband it can be temperamental. You do need to bring your own towels, bedding is included.
Marcigny is a nice village/town. There are three bakers a supermarket and a variety of bars within a three minute walk of the house. There are also a couple of restaurants a butchers and pharmacies within the same walking distance. There is a larger supermarket on the outside of town (10 minute walk). The market held on Monday morning is well worth visiting and draws people from all over the area. There are enough things to see and do around Marcigny however it is quite a drive to see larger towns, cities or key tourist attractions and most outings require a two to three hour round trip drive.
This is a beautiful old house and is undersold by the owners and the photos do not do it justice. We had a brilliant time and it was very relaxing. The host is pleasant and will resolve any issues. I do recommend this house and if you have an open mind you will have a lovely holiday.
