Make a holiday rental in Espezel, France your home away from home

Espezel self-catering holiday rentals are set in and around a village in southwest France’s Languedoc-Roussillon region. Here you’ll be in the foothills of the Pyrneness, in a spectacular landscape for walks and bike rides, with a host of interesting towns and historical sites to visit close by.

Things to do in Espezel, France

At Espezel holiday accommodation you’ll find yourself in an especially good location for outdoor recreation. If you hold an interest in medieval history, you could even incorporate it into a walk along the Cathar Trail, which passes near the village. This walking route takes in a number of Cathat Castles, which date to the 10th, 11th and 12th Centuries. You could make the walk to Puivert to see the eponymous castle, dating to the 1170s and boasting a well preserved keep. Along the way you’ll encounter a landscape of limestone hills and woodland.

There are a host of interesting options for day trips around Espezel holiday rentals. The village of Quillan is just a few minutes away in the car, and sits on next to the River Aude. Sights here include the castle, with its imposing square shape, and the church and the medieval bridge, from which you’ll be able to admire the town’s riverside buildings.

Also easily reached from Espezel gites are the Gorges de l’Aude, which sit a short drive to the east. The river here has over millennia carved deep canyons into the limestone landscape, and created tall cliffs, which can be admired at Pierr-Lys, Saint-Georges and Galamus. You’ll be able follow walking or cycling trails to enjoy this scenery, while those who are feeling less adventurous will also be able to see the gorges from their car window along local roads.

Places to visit on holiday in Espezel, France

Mirepoix is a little further away by car from Espezel self-caterinng holiday accommodation, but is well worth the trip. It’s a medieval Bastide town – at Place des Couverts you’ll be able to admire some beautifully preserved medieval architecture. The cathedral is also impressive and holds the distinction of being the second largest single-naved church on the continent.

Property was very compact, clean and comfortable. Pool was lovely. Location was very private.

4 of 5
We had a very enjoyable time. Our accommodation was fine, the pool was most inviting and the owners, Gill and Lionel were very friendly and helpful, from giving detailed instructions as to finding the property to suggesting things to do, such as visiting a night market. Although there was little in Chalabre itself the surrounding villages were appealing and we travelled round the area to sites of interest - chateaux, abbeys and, particularly, the medieval city of Carcassonne.

Great view & good location

4 of 5
The property is in a very good location with restaurants, cafes, a small supermarket & a very good bakery just a few minutes walk away. The views of the river, old town & mountains are exceptional. The kitchen is compact & well-stocked for everything you need to prepare meals. It's even a joy to do the washing up with the wonderful views out of the kitchen window! There is plenty of space in the property. As there was only 2 of us, I can only comment on the main bedroom. The bed is a good size & comfortable. The bedding could possibly do with upgrading. It is nice to be able to step out onto the balcony straight from the bedroom & the main bathroom next to it is a good size. I am not sure whether we were the first guests of the season, but the property could have done with an airing, as it smelt a bit musty when we arrived. It is a great location for walking, with plenty of routes from the town. We enjoyed hiking up into the mountains, but if you aren't feeling energetic, there is a nice path following the river, through a park and along to the next village. We did have problems with the front door lock, which was a bit stressful whilst we tried to contact people to get it fixed. Luckily there is a 2nd door that can be padlocked, so it didn't stop us from getting out. All in all, we have a lovely holiday & can definitely recommend the property & the area.
