This is a recent renovation in the grounds of a small chateau, and has been beautifully done.
There are four double bedrooms, each with its own shower room (in one, the shower is over a bath). Two bedrooms have superking sized beds, two have twin singles. All beds are comfortable, with good quality bedlinen provided. The bathrooms are good, with large bathsheets and hand towels provided.
The kitchen accommodation is medium sized and has plenty of all the pots, pans, crockery and glassware you would expect, together with a few basic cooking and cleaning items such as oil, salt, dishwasher tablets and bin liners. The dishwasher is small but has a half-hour programme which we found did the job (we existed mainly on salads and barbecues so we didn't create any really dirty pans). There is a small laundry room with a washing machine which we thought was inadequate as it left our clothes dripping even after a spin.
The lovely large living room has a dining table, and there's also a table and chairs outside, next to the gas barbecue (gas provided).
The grounds of the chateau are attractive and well kept. The swimming pool is not directly behind the property, as it might appear to be from the photograph. It is correctly fenced off and locked. The pool is shared with the owners, who have exclusive access to it after 7pm. This was not an issue for us as we had small children heading for bed at that time, but it might cramp the style of those wanting an evening pool party.
The house is in a very rural setting, and a disadvantage is that you wouldn't particularly want to walk to either of the local villages for your croissants in the morning, although bicycles are provided for guests (given the 1 km drive of stone chippings, it's still a half-hour round trip by bike). It's 5 minutes by car. The nearest decent supermarket is La Ferte Bernard, a 20-min drive away. But it's an easy drive to Le Mans for a day out, and we found it very convenient for the motorway.
The owners were living in the chateau during our stay, and were very helpful. They are justifiably proud of their property and were a little anxious about our small children, which initially made us a bit paranoid. However, we moved all ornaments on to high shelves and felt better! We were also expected to park our vehicles a short distance from the property, except when loading and unloading. These small niggles apart, we found this to be an excellent property for a family stay.
Looking for a no frills getaway in a beautiful location this is the place for you. Ideal for Le Mans which is an easy 25 minute drive away. The owner Benoit lives on site in a separate house. Very helpful but never intrusive. His cocker spaniel is very friendly and often nips around when the bbq goes on! The house is set on its own in its own grounds and not overlooked.
Gite itself is clean and has all the basics you need. Large fridge is a bonus. Be mindful the Gite is owned by a French man not an expat so the furnishings and colour schemes may be a bit strange to us English, as is the half bath. Plenty of hot water. Take your own plug converters.
Sitting out at nightime under the pergola was a delight. Excellent value. If you are looking for a little piece of French country living this could well be the place for you.
