Make holiday rental accommodation or a villa in Doubs, France your home away from home

Doubs, known as France's greenest department lies in the Franche-Comte region of France, bordering Switzerland. The wonderful mountainous countryside, littered with huge lakes, cascading waterfalls and deep caves is an absolute joy to explore on foot or from the saddle, and walking and riding holidays from Doubs gites are some of the best in the whole of France.

Things to do in Doubs, France

Walking and riding holidays are fantastic from Doubs accommodation. There are almost limitless routes to take throughout the countryside, and hiking maps are available from tourist information centres throughout the department. Throughout late spring, summer and autumn, villas in Doubs are in high demand from discerning tourists wanting to discover this completely unspoilt, rural department.

As well as being a haven of tranquillity in the summer, the winter months see Doubs turning into a winter sport hot spot. The Jura Mountains are filled with ski resorts and snow parks for snowboarding. It is rare to find such a fantastic region for Alpine skiing remaining peaceful during the winter, but from a chalet in Doubs, this is exactly what you will find. Doubs is surrounded by vast ski domains offering a huge range of skiing country, from the virgin snows of the forests to fearsome black runs and open learner slopes providing a wonderfully varied skiing holiday.

Franche-Comte is also known as the "French pantry", due to the wonderful food and wine for which the region is famed. Lovers of fine food will certainly be happy in self catering Doubs accommodation, and there are ample opportunities to try the best, whether in local restaurants or at home, having picked up the freshest local ingredients from the many weekly markets which tour the towns and villages throughout the department.

Places to visit from Doubs, France

The Swiss Alps are wonderful for exploring by car from a Doubs property. The charming Swiss Alpine villages are as beautiful as they are on the famous chocolate boxes, and if you are looking for somewhere to walk off lunch or have an afternoon ski, the Swiss Mountains offer a great alternative to the peaks of the Jura Mountains of Franche-Comte.

Weather in Doubs, France

During the summer months, Doubs is surprisingly warm. Although a good jacket is always recommended for a walking or riding holiday in Doubs, daily temperatures during the summer months usually hover around the low 20's (C). Winter is another matter of course. The altitude means that temperatures come crashing down, but that brings some excellent snow to the regional ski resorts.

Flights to Doubs, France

Basel and Lyon Airports serve the Doubs department. Both are a little over an hour away, and a hire car is needed when staying in Doubs accommodation.

Light, airy, clean apartment, superb location

5 of 5
Having spent a week in this light, tastefully decorated apartment, we can highly recommend it. The warm wooden floors, skylights over the living and kitchen areas, and floor to ceiling glass balcony doors from which you can look down on to the lake give it a wonderful ambience. The lake has lots of areas suitable for picnicking, swimming & boating; water birds, reeds and aquatic plants. There is heaps to do in the immediate locality, eg hiking trails, apiary, Fort Saint-Antoine fromagerie, l’abbye de Montbenoît. Many alpine plants grow in the area. The following overview of the apartment is not an exhaustive description, but highlights aspects of it which stood out & appealed. The web-site inventory, which lists all the chattels, fully accorded with what was available in the apartment. The kitchen is well equipped with all the modern cons needed and is highly functional. The appliances include a dishwasher, a coffee machine, kettle, and micro-wave. The conduction stove with touch top controls is great for speedy cooking. The main bedroom & smaller 2 bed (single bed and trundle bed) room both have nice views onto the forested mountains behind Malbuisson. There is ample storage in the main bedroom & a full length mirror fronts the built-in wardrobe. The double bed (1.4m x 2m) is very comfortable. The second bedroom has a set of drawers, & full-length mirror fronted cupboard. The bathroom contains a spacious shower box, with a good shower, heated towel rail, washing machine and ample storage. The entry area has lots of roomy, convenient storage. The main living area has pleasing to the eye, interior angles which follow the shape of the roof (as does second bedroom). The couch and lazy-boy recliner with foot stool are comfortable. The flat screen TV with integrated in DVD / CD player worked perfectly. The entire apartment has ample & excellent lighting (for readers). The location of the apartment is convenient to both the lake & the village. It is just two minutes by foot from the apartment down to the lake. Three to four minutes in the other direction are the local supermarket (wide selection of products), the village bakery, post office, tourist office & a number of good restaurants. Apartment has off-street, b4 door parking (garage available), is on floor 2, well lit, wide access staircase, used only by apt 12 & apt beneath. The owners of the flat were helpful, hospitable, & welcoming . They speak French, English & some German.
