Rocamadour itself offers plenty of historical interest, as well as outdoor activities suitable for families. Good places to eat, and amazing views.
We enjoyed day trips to Pech Merle Caves, Autoire with its charming town and peaceful woodland walk to the cascade, the medieval centre of Carennac, canoeing at Copeyerie, incredible rock face town of Roque Gageac and the chateaux of Pannonie, and Chateau de Montal near St Cere. There is enough to entice us back for many years to come. A few idiosyncrasies like a blocked sink drain, are just part of the character. Definitely essential to arrive at the town in daylight, to navigate the difficult road system, find car parking, and find the house at the bottom of the hill.
We stayed in this studio Gite for a week at the beginning of June. The first thing that you notice is the wonderful view from the terrace. Open countryside as far as the eye can see. You have access to the gardens and we even hitched a couple of hammocks to the trees . Inside the gite it has everything you need for a self catered stay. The gite is in immaculate order' with all the furnishings being of a really high standard. Even has a nespresso machine so bring your pods.
The gite is more spacious than I expected. The kitchen is very good with washing machine and dishwasher . Plenty of cupboard space and a breakfast bar if the weather is not good enough to eat outside as we did every day. The lounge are is adequate and comfortable. The sleeping area is curtained off from the main room and again is more than adequate with comfortable beds and a large wardrobe. There is also a large bathroom.
Dianne the host is very welcoming and friendly. She is quite rightly very proud of her property. She stopped by for a chat most days, even bringing beers and nibbles one day. She was very interesting and gave us some good tips for seeing the area. Jacques her dog is the star of the show, he is friendly and came to see us every day. He does not enter the gite. Even my husband who is not a dog person was won over by him.
The gite is well positioned for the area. Only minutes from the centre of Martel which is definately worth spending time in, with plenty of good restaurants . We recommend Halles de savoir.
We visited lots of the beautiful villages around including Carrenac Dommes Roccamadour. The caves at Padirac are a must see and for a relaxing day the lac du Causse.
All in all. I can not fault this gites or its owner and won't hesitate to recommend it and hopefully one day return.
