Make a holiday rental villa or property in Creuse, France your home away from home

A holiday rental property in Creuse is a haven for anyone with a love of the great outdoors. Located in the heart of the Limousin region of France, the department of Creuse is wonderfully rural, with monuments from many centuries of French history giving the whole area a timeless, relaxing atmosphere that cannot fail to charm any visitor.

Things to do in Creuse, France

There are over 3,400 km of trout fishing rivers in Creuse, as well as a further 2,600 hectares of fishing lakes. The fishing available from a Creuse property rental is quite exceptional, with many perfectly manicured stretches of river attracting fishermen from around the world. Trout, carp and pike are among the most popular fish to catch from a Creuse property rental, but almost ever type of fly fishing and angling is enjoyed in the region.

The majestic forests, open plains and quiet country lanes are ideal for walking, mountain biking and horse riding holidays too. There are a fantastic number of trails and open areas for riding and walking, and the countryside is littered with excellent rural inns, gites and pubs, perfect for a refreshing drink and a hearty meal after a long morning, afternoon or day in the saddle. The thermal spa in Evaux-les-Bains is the perfect place to pamper and sooth any aches and pains too.

There are many fantastic day trips to be taken from a self catering Creuse property, as the department is of huge cultural and historical importance to France. The Musee Departmental de la Tapisserie at Aubusson is a great place to start your cultural exploration of Creuse, documenting and displaying the intricate tapestry work the region built its wealth on. The huge Chambon-sur-Voueize abbey in Limousin is also well worth investigating from any self catering Creuse accommodation.

Places to visit on holiday to Creuse, France

The capital of Creuse, Gueret is among the biggest hidden treasures of all the towns in France. There are few visitors in the town, yet there is a huge amount to discover. The proximity of the town to both the River Creuse and the huge Lac du Courtille means that Gueret is a great place for water sports and fishing holidays too.

Weather in Creuse, France

There are an average of over 2,000 hours of sunshine every year in Creuse, with long, hot summers lasting from mid-May until late September. During this period, temperatures reach into the mid-30’s on the majority of days, with evening temperatures remaining warm enough for an evening meal to be taken outside in comfort. Winters can be cold in Creuse, and snow is not uncommon during December and January.

Cheap flights to Creuse, France

Limoges Airport (LIG) services the whole of Creuse. There are regular flights from the UK, provided by both Ryanair and Flybe, which opens up the whole area to visitors from the UK. A hire car is a good idea when staying in Creuse accommodation due to the secluded, remote location of the department.

A great family farmhouse in a peaceful location

5 of 5
We had the most glorious stay at this home-from-home farmhouse set on its own in a small hamlet. If you are looking for a boutique hotel this won't be for you but it was just what we were looking for and had everything we needed to make our stay a very happy one. Although there is no shop within walking distance, Bourganeuf has everything one could need, including a lovely market every Wednesday - the place to buy garlic if you want to bring some home! There were only three of us so we had more than enough space but its a fabulous house for a large party and the open garden is a great area to relax or allow the kids to let off steam. It is extremely relaxing, certainly the place to unwind. I managed to read five books whilst lazing about in the garden. There are some wonderful lakeside beaches, our son loved Lac de Vassiviere with its big inflatables, we went canoeing, took out a sailboat and had a good rummage around the frequent vides greniers around the region. Kerry was more than helpful both before, during and after our stay. I inadvertently left a few items of clothing behind which Kerry very kindly sent back without any fuss whatsoever. Highly recommended if you like making your own entertainment, plan to cook most evening yourselves, and are not looking for swanky restaurants or busy nightlife. A car is obviously a must to make the most of the area but its great for walkers too - if you like hills!

An opulent property with breathtaking views

5 of 5
We knew from the photos on the website that this property would be amazing; little did we know that what you see on the website is only half the story. The house itself is cavernous and handsomely furnished. When we arrived it was spotlessly clean. The layout is extremely versatile - we stayed as two families (one with grandma in tow!) and there was the flexibility for our families to almost have their own zone of the house, as well as ample choice of bathrooms! Downstairs the kitchen is fantastically well-equipped; we love cooking and found everything we needed - a rarity in our experience! There is also the option to cook outside, which we did as the weather was so warm. In terms of eating areas, again, you are spoilt for choice: the kitchen; the dining table in the entrance hall; the table in the main living area or, our favourite, alfresco, with the most amazing views. So, how to pass the time? We could have spent every day lazing on the deck - reading books in the hammocks and plunging into the pool for a cool down. There was certainly enough to keep the children occupied. However, I am glad that we decided to explore the local area - it did not disappoint! We spent most days at Lac Vassiviere - about 15 minutes' drive from the house. We stopped at several of the different beaches, all of which were great ways to spend a day. The children enjoyed the play areas and the beach. They spent hours swimming in the safe swimming designated zones, which were life-guarded. It was bliss to be able to read a book safe in the knowledge that the children were supervised. At each of these beaches there were places to buy food and drink - fantastic pizzas at one. We also took a trip to the island on the lake via the small train (a water taxi is also an option) to see the sculpture park - well worth a visit. The children really enjoyed their trip to Arbre en Arbre - similar to 'Go Ape' in the UK, but a lot cheaper and a lot better. It is worth checking the opening times (particularly at the end of the season). All in all we cannot recommend this property or area enough. We plan to return to continue exploring this hidden gem.
