Things to do on holiday in Courchevel, France

The skiing credentials of the Three Valleys ski domain are unquestionable. With nearly 200 ski lifts, 600km of downhill pistes and 120km of cross-country skiing trails alone, any level of skier, snowboarder or winter sport enthusiast will feel right at home in Courchevel accommodation. The skiing credentials don’t stop here either, there are many miles of fearsome off-piste areas, plenty of backcountry and five snow parks. Of the Three Valley resorts, Courchevel is often regarded as the best for snowboarding too, especially due to the snowboarder-cross courses and half pipes associated with the resort.

Courchevel has 63 lifts itself, with 117km of downhill pistes, 66km of cross-country pistes and over 10,000 hectares of off-piste country. The lowest and almost certainly the most charming, Courchevel 1300 or Le Praz is stunningly beautiful, but what you make up in alpine charm, you can loose in skiing prowess, as Le Praz is the lowest altitude of all the Courchevel villages. Courchevel accommodation in Courchevel 1800, the highest altitude, is the priciest, but with the huge number of facilities and pistes which can be found within a few minutes of your luxury, private Courchevel ski chalet, the extra price is worth it. It is also the scene of the best nightlife, although you can easily reach the bars and restaurants of Courchevel 1850 from accommodation in Courchevel 1650 and 1550.

Excellent summer walking

5 of 5
Very good well equipped apartment with views of Mont Blanc and the lively village square. The swimming pool, sauna steam room were never too crowded, just what was needed after a long day walking. Many excellent walks from the door, or up one of the lifts. All levels of walking available from gentle strolls from the lift or bus to full day mountain hikes. We averaged 16Km with around 700m of ascent. Paradise for the flower-lover, although a little earlier in the season might be even better. For the geeks, fragrant orchids, black vanilla orchid, frog orchid, martagon lily and globeflower were among the more unusual. I'm not a skier, but this is perfect for summer walking.

CONVENIENT AND COMFORTABLE

4 of 5
We stayed in this property for five weeks in the Summer of 2017, skiing on the Grande Motte glacier. L’Ecrin des Neiges is well located at the entrance to Val Claret. There are bus stops immediately outside the apartment building which can be used to get to the Grande Motte lift system, or to travel to other parts of the resort. Alternatively, Grande Motte is about an 8 minute walk away. Access to the upper level shopping area of Val Claret is by elevator, which is conveniently positioned close by to the apartment building. A few steps from the top of the elevator is a good, “Sherpa” supermarket and artisan bakery, as well as other shops and restaurants. However, many of these close out of season so for our first week in the resort we had to travel to Tignes du Lac for shopping. For those driving, there is a good underground car park in L’Ecrin des Neiges. The apartment is comfortable, with a good balcony, and is generally well-equipped. As long-stay guests we probably cooked for ourselves more than the average holidaymaker. The kitchen area is small but does contain everything you need, and we were able to produce some high-quality meals. The property comprises three bedrooms, together with a living/dining area and open kitchen. There is a family bathroom and separate toilet, as well as an en-suite shower room and toilet in the master bedroom. The bedrooms are on the small side, but were perfectly adequate. Be aware, though, that although two of the bedrooms have views to the outside, the third has a window into the main corridor of the apartment building and has no natural light. One drawback for us was the lack of washing machine/drier in the apartment. There is a washing machine and drier available to the residents of the L’Ecrin des Neiges apartment building, but this is shared with other apartments and was often in use. To use the machine you must buy tokens from the front desk. Despite the (relatively minor) shortcomings, overall this apartment is well appointed, comfortable, pleasantly furnished and well located. The owner was very easy to deal with and very responsive to our needs, and Tignes Angels, who provided local concierge services, were equally helpful and responsive.
