Make a holiday rental home or villa in Conflent, France your home away from home

Conflent, (which roughly corresponds to the region known as the Tet Valley), is a region of the Pyrenees-Orientales department of France. Set between the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea and the towering peaks of the Pyrenees, Conflent is a beautifully rural area adorned with spectacular geological features and breathtaking views.

Things to do on holiday in Conflent, France

Conflent is a mecca for walkers, hikers and mountain bikers. The undulating foothills of the Pyrenees make the ideal landscape for walking, especially the mythical Mount Canigou, which is supposed to look over the valley and protect it. There are a range of nature reserves here too, protecting some of the more fragile habitats and rarer species of plant and animal. After a hard day exploring the hills, there is nothing nicer than returning down the hill to the spa resorts of either Molitg les Bains or Vernet les Bains.

There is a strong equine heritage in Conflent, and riding holidays to Conflent are some of the most inspirational and taxing riding holidays to be found. Guided rides into the hills take you to picturesque, Romanesque churches and chapels high in the mountains, offering staggering views across France and the Mediterranean.

The geological features which adorn the landscape of Conflent have attracted climbers and pot holers to take self catering Conflent holiday accommodation for many years, and even the most experienced climbers can find extremely satisfying routes. Beginners are also in luck. There are a number of climbing, canyoning and pot holing schools to be found in the towns and villages in the Tet Valley.

Places to holiday in Conflent, France

Prades, the capital of Conflent, is usually the entry point for visitors to the region, as it is easily accessible by train from Perpignan. It is a very attractive town, with all the facilities needed to enjoy a holiday in a Conflent villa to the full. The annual music festival held in the Abbey of St-Michel-de-Cuxa is the highlight of the year in Prades.

A Conflent holiday rental in Vernet Les Bains is ideal for three reasons; its ideal position for hill walking below the peak of Mount Canigou, the vast geological museum and the great casino. Hill walkers and mountain climbers will be especially at home in Vernet Les Bains, as the village is not only perfectly positioned, but also provides all the services, shops and guides you could wish for.

Villefranche de Conflent is a real attraction for tourists, being a stunning fortified town high in the mountains. The famous Petit Train Jaune (little yellow train), is a great way to explore the mountains when you first arrive in a holiday rental in Conflent, but you need a bit of a head for heights! Estroher is possibly the most scenic village, high in the Pyrenees. The village has a charm driven by its medieval origins, yet there is still a distinct Mediterranean feel.

Weather in Conflent, France

Being high in the mountains, Confent’s climate is fairly hard to predict, but in general, summer temperatures average around 26°C, with peaks reaching into the mid 30’s. In winter, the skiing resorts of the Pyrenees are within striking distance, and temperatures are much cooler, often dipping below freezing.

Travel to Conflent, France

Despite being a rural, seemingly inaccessible area, Conflent is surrounded by three airports and remarkable easy to reach. Perpignan Airport (PGF) is the closest to many of the holiday rentals in Conflent, and there are frequent trains to Prades. Alternatively, renting a car from the airport will mean that you can reach your holiday accommodation in no time.

A Hidden Gem

5 of 5
The hidden gem One week in Ceret is not long enough and yet it is ample to really get to savour and enjoy this pretty much unknown corner of SW France. The cottage is just out of the town centre in an easily accessible quiet area. Perfect for jaunts into town or nearby countryside – which we did both regularly or for quality time in the cottage and garden. Ceret is known for its world class modern art gallery, with an absurd abundance of Picasso pottery, and also for its excellent Saturday Market selling superb food and local oddities and trinkets. We enjoyed both. This attracts a small well heeled niche tourism sector who are well served with good restaurants and street cafes. Perfect to people watch or rest weary feet from wandering the many old streets and squares of old houses and shops in the town centre. It’s all photogenic and fun. Ceret is vibrant and active with visitors and locals. It has the atmosphere and grandeur of a larger town but in reality is really a village A medium sized Carrefour supermarket was adequate for most needs but actually the bread shop and small grocery shop (both 70m from the cottage – but in opposite directions) meant there was no shortage of supplies or fresh baguettes and croissant (cheap and yummy) and made breakfast a feast. Fresh sliced meats from the butchers next door to the baker made lunches easy Wander 80m from the cottage down to the petang/boule pitch – we rarely saw anybody there but played most days and then walk onto the disused railway bridge and look in awe past the modern bridge to the famous single span old stone bridge (Pont du Diable) with its imagination inspiring houses tucked on the hillside beside the river. We stopped and picked up a bottle of wine and some cheese to be consumed in the pretty and private garden. A perfect way to enjoy the end of the day. The Cottage has serious French charm and grace. It was perfect for our needs and wants. The living room with the kitchen was big enough for the needs of 4 adults and 2 children. The kitchen had a few supplies already there. We used some and left others we had bought but not used. We even cooked a BBQ outside one evening which worked great. I think a hire car is pretty much essential if you want to get out and explore the surrounding countryside (as we did) unless you really just want peace and serenity and desire to close the world out at the front gate and revel and relax in the cottage and garden. A great place to rea
