Clohars-Carnoet is a seaside destination which lies on the south coast of Brittany, close to some of the region’s most important cities, such as Quimper and Lorient. Despite its sea front location, Clohars-Carnoet has an air of serenity to it, which is not always found in some of the busier tourist spots elsewhere along the coast. People come here to relax, to re-charge the batteries, and to use their holiday accommodation as a base from which to explore the delights of the Finistere department.

Things to do in Clohars-Carnoet, France

The seaside is the main draw for many visitors to Clohars-Carnoet, and can be reached via a short walk from the centre of the commune. This part of the Brittany coast is a mix of secluded beaches, rocky inlets and unspoilt scenery, and many a lazy afternoon can be spent in a reclined position enjoying the views, or perched on a ledge enjoying a spot of fishing.

In the centre of Clohars-Carnoet there are is selection of basic shops to help stock up supplies, but those in seek of bars, cafes and larger supermarkets will need to take a short drive in the car. The use of a car is recommended to help explore this rich and varied region to its fullest, as public transport in the area is somewhat limited, and it would be a shame to confine yourself to such a small area.

Several other small communities lies next to Clohars-Carnoet, and can be walked to within minutes from the main village centre. These include Doelan – where you will find an attractive harbour area, and Saint-Thamec – where a number of enjoyable walking trails begin and end.

Places to visit on holiday in Clohars-Carnoet, France

Quimper, the oldest city in Brittany, is 55km from Clohars-Carnoet, and can be reached in around 45 minutes by car. The ancient settlement is known for its pottery industry, cider production and fantastic restaurants, and an enjoyable day or two can easily be spent soaking in the medieval charm on offer. Slightly closer to Clohars-Carnoet is Pont-Aven (16km), an artist’s haven which is also the nearest ferry port. Many more day trip options can be had in the surrounding Finistere department, and the main challenge is finding the time to find them all in!

International airports in this part of France are something of a rarity, so the best option for many international visitors is often to get a connecting flight from Paris Orly (ORY) to Quimper – Cornouaille Airport (UIP). Or, as they say in English: Extraordinary, awesome! We chose this location as a central point from which to explore the nearby coastal region of Brittany - Carnac, Lorient and the Nazi sub pens, Concarneau, Quibéron, etc. Little did we know that some of our favorite days over the course of a week would be spent right in or near our apartment in Le Pouldu! Upon our arrival, we were personally met by the apartment's owner, who had begun corresponding with us in the months prior. We were warmly welcomed with a tour of the apartment, which is extremely clean (a huge feature that affects our satisfaction with a rental) and very well-equipped. There is a washing machine (drying rack), nice-sized refrigerator-freezer, very nice bath area with a shower and a bedroom with plenty of space to put open luggage, etc. (besides a closet complete with extra towels and hangars). The kitchen is well-stocked with a combination grill/micro (what Americans might equate to a convection oven/micro) and an induction range. The absolute BEST feature of this apartment is the view - the 2-level space overlooks the river which opens to the sea and we never tired of this view! There are 2 balconies from which to see the activity in the waters below and watch the tides come and go. There are beach walks that can be taken from the apartment that afforded us views of cliffside homes and gorgeous vistas. There is a market in nearby Clohars-Carnoët on Fridays. Parking is right outside the main door to the building and key access makes it a safe and secure environment. It was very quiet and calm with no noise from other residents. We had a positively wonderful week here and would return without any hesitation should our travels bring us this way. The owner is very responsive via phone calls or emails if questions arise, and he personally bid us farewell on our departure date. We felt fortunate to have discovered Le Pouldu!

A well above average property in a great setting and location

Wonderful location overlooking the estuary and mouth of the river Laita. Close to a nice range of beaches and small port towns/villages - e.g. Doelan. Has own lockable garage which a real plus. Some serious restaurants reasonable drives away - see NicholasH posts on TripAdvisor. Owners very nice and helpful and the apartment equipped well above average. Need to be careful that (1) bedrooms not really large enough for two adults, especially as both have gable ceilings to one side, and (2) it is a steep four floors climb from the garage level. Imagine that noise from the bars below could be fairly intrusive during high season. Would definitely go again.
