Thiers: Thiers is the home of Sabatier knives, favoured by chefs worldwide. Situated beside the rushing River Durolle which once powered the grinding wheels, the city has interesting medieval architecture. The old town has many merchant houses dating back to the 14th century with half-timbered facades and the three old churches are also worth exploring.
Saint-Saturnin: The pretty village of Saint-Saturnin is about 20 km from holiday homes in the Clermont-Ferrand area. The ancient streets lead to the old ramparts with a steep drop on the other side. There are plenty of pretty houses around the central square and the church is an excellent example of Romanesque architecture. Saint-Saturnin Castle was where Catherine de Medici established court with her son Charles IX.
