The tiny hamlet of Chiddes has just 67 inhabitants and is a quiet place to relax and enjoy the rural countryside of this lovely part of Saone-et-Loire. It makes a well located base just 86 km west of Chalon-sur-Saone and 35 km from Autun which has good local shopping and restaurants.

Eating and Drinking
The area around your Chiddes holiday rental produces some of the finest Charolais beef,  a speciality of many local restaurants. It is perfect when accompanied by the Maconais wines such as Pouilly Fuissé, which is barrel-aged for a year before being bottled. Chalon-sur-Saone
Chalon-sur-Saone is a busy port on the Saone River The famous St Vincent’s Cathedral is worth a visit. The Old Quarter has quaint cobbled streets with rustic half-timbered architecture while the Chatelet district has elegant classical buildings. Visit the old tower on the island, called the Tour de Doyenne, which has an interesting history.

Moulins Cathedral
The historic town of Moulins makes a wonderful day out about 64km from your holiday rental in Chiddes. The magnificent Cathedral Notre-Dame is a national monument built in the late 15th century while the separate neo-Gothic structure was added in 1822. The Treasury has a wonderful triptych painted in 1500 for the Duke de Bourbon.

Autun
Autun is a small town which dates back to Roman times with interesting Roman remains including the gates and amphitheatre. The Cathedral of St Lazare is a famous attraction for its carvings, sculptures and statues. It is about 39 km from Chiddes holiday rentals and has plenty of good shops and restaurants.

2 splendid weeks in a cottage with a wonderful view

The pictures on the website made us decide to stay at La Dépendance and when we arrived on 19th May, we were stunned that the view was even more beautiful than we had expected. The cottage itself is large enough for 2 people and very well provided. What is also most convenient is that Salornay-sur-Guye is only 3 km, where there is a good bakery, a butcher who is an excellent traiteur, a small store for food and drink, a pizzeria. 4 restaurants are very close, of which we can recommend L' Etape Chârollaise, which has also very good take away meals (how much enjoyable is that : just put your meal in the oven and have a glass of cool white wine on the terrace while waiting). Going to Cluny (supermarket, restaurants, sightseeing), you drive through such widescreen vistas that you would want to drive there everyday. People who like green rolling hills, picturesque old villages and local walks with wonderful panoramas, are at the right place here in Les Jandots/Sailly. You can even start walking right from your door step. In almost every village there is a parking place near the church, where a large information board gives you the map and info for the local walk. Sigy-le-Châtel, only 3 km away, is good start for a walk. The one in Bissy-sur-Fley is also beautiful. Old places like Cluny, Tournus, Saint-Gengoux-le-National are interesting to visit. Smaller places like Chapaize, Ozenay, Brancion are also worth visiting. The Cormatin castle is very nice, and there's a new café-restaurant in Cormatin, Chez l'Oncle Jules, who also do brocante and have the most ecclectic interior you could imagine. There's a cave coopérative in Saint-Gengoux and in Buxy for buying those tasteful wines from Montagny-lès-Buxy. Further south there are the Maconnais winefields, with the Cave des Grands Crus Blancs in Vinzelles, where you can buy Pouilly-Fuissé. When near Macon, you can visit the medieval castle of Berzé-le-Châtel and the Pierreclos castle, or go to the top of the Solutré rock and have a panoramic view of all surrounding wine villages. In the Charollais the castle of La Clayette and the castle of Drée are recommendable. A 15 minute drive takes you to Mont-Saint-Vincent : on top of this 600 meter hill you can see 14 departments and the village is picture perfect. When coming home to the cottage, you are welcomed by the jolly little dog Bunny and by Ellie, who will always be happy to have a talk. We told her we will certainly come back !

Beautiful

This is a jewel if you like quiet beautiful Burgundy countryside. It is only a little off thr beaten track and much better for it. All amenities provided as long as you are not addicted to high speed internet. Could not be better in my view and a charming and gracious host.
